Canon P Shutter Curtain Issue

Hi guys, I just got a Canon P from ebay some days ago. Unfortunately, seems like the seller didn't explain clearly about the condition. After testing a roll of film, I realize there's a defect on the curtain - the 2 curtains ended up meeting inside the frame - leaving a portion of the film unexposed. This happens at all speed.

Do you guys think this can be repaired? What can caused this happen?

It can probably be repaired with a simple CLA, but that will probably cost more than you paid for the camera. You could return it, instead.

I’ve seen this in another canon P and a VI-T I bought. I couldn’t figure out how to fix it, canon P’s are harder to completely take apart when compared to original leica screwmounts. I had a feeling that it was probably due to some gears getting out of sync on the main curtain drum.
It’s a good idea just to return it. You’ll be able to find another one for around $100 anyway.

Shutter adjustment is needed. It can be a DIY job, but better done by someone with experience, as you can overdo it.

Basically you take the bottom plate off the camera, which exposes the adjusters for the shutter curtains that consist of two screws locked down with star nuts. You use either the proper tool to loosen the star nuts (or a pair of needle nose pliers), then turn the screws to adjust the tension on the curtain, making sure all the while that you have the screwdriver engaged with the adjusting screws so they don't unwind the take-up springs, and you have to start from scratch. Lock down the star nuts, and check speeds.

A shutter speed measuring system is good to have too, so you don't have one problem fixed, only to create another. Since it was sold to you like that, indicates it hasn't been serviced for a long time. Might even need a lubrication, and wouldn't hurt to get the finder cleaned out too.

So, better done by someone with experience. Worth the money, and you'll have a camera that will give you years of good use.

I have a Canon 7 which had an issue with the second shutter curtain stopping short of clearing the film gate after exposure. Originally thought remedy lay in shutter spring tension adjustment but eventually found that the shutter curtain brake was sticking. Removed the component, cleaned and lubricated got the shutter to work properly.
Might be the same issue.
