I know the A1 and the AE1 often developed the canon 'cough' but did this ever occur with the earlier Canon P, sometime its sounds like its coughing, l know l might sound mad but its a really strange shutter noise

Never heard it, but whatever you do, don't spray it with WD-40.
will definaitly keep away from the WD40

Dry fire it at one second. Do you hear the “cough” when the first shutter curtain closes? Or the second?

Hi Mike,
My P sounds like a normal focal plane shutter, nice clean sound, a bit louder than my IIIc's cloth shutter, no cough evident.
Cheers,
Lynn

Edit: Sorry, I meant my Canon P

Reciprocity Failure
Slower than 1/60, there is an escapement release that you are probably hearing. Sort of a swish/bounce sound.
