I've just put a 'softie' shutter release button on my Canon P. I had one frame remaining on the roll in the camera, so I shot that off (which felt lovely) and then the roll was done .. but the rewind release (the knurled collar around the shutter button, right?) wouldn't turn to allow rewind. WTF? After stripping some film cogs and triple exposing the last frame and whatnot-else trying to figure out what was going on, I absentmindedly loosened the softie .. and the collar turned easily. Screwed it snug again .. no turn.
And so -- with the softie screwed in *just*barely*snug*, it locks up the rewind collar. Backing it off 1/8 turn releases the collar.
Is this normal on the Canon P?? I haven't had it terribly long, and never before 'accessorized' the shutter button. Does any softie, or a cable release, lock up the rewind? Or is it the fault of this particular (inexpensive) softie button-- perhaps it protrudes a fraction of a mm too long? Does the 'Tom A softie' work better?
thx
Dave
Canon P, Jupiter-8, Jupiter-12 (yes it fits, thanks), Elmar 3.5/5 (yes it collapses, with care)

Well-known
most likely the softie is sticking in too deep, file it down a fraction of mm more should fix the issue.

I can say from personal experience that my Tom A softies did not do this.
I would guess that a cable release if very long would--likely you can't turn the rewind "switch" while the shutter is depressed and so the softie you have must be, as newfilm said above, slightly too long.
Either shorten the one you have or get one of Tom A's.
I've used them on all my FSU cameras; a Leica M4; Canons P, 7, IVsb2, and Vt; Yashica and Rollei TLRs; Kiev/Arax 60; and I'm sure I'm forgetting some other cameras.
The only trouble I've ever had has been the soft release occasionally loosening.

Thanks for the feedback. The button threading is indeed too long. I filed increments from the tip until the release worked properly. The vendor had sent two buttons, so I was able to compare before/after -- which shows I removed about 1mm. All well now.

The vendor said "Actually, we've never run into this problem... Can you try it on another camera?" Now that's polite enough, but it certainly won't *solve* the issue
I've informed them of developments. We know they're not going to adjust manufacturing.. they probably have 10,000 of the damned things in their warehouse .. but at least they can respond more sensibly if someone else complains.
PS Just to be clear, I got the red one so I'd know where to push.
