Canon P - won't rewind!

Yeah you should really be able to see what is going on with the back open. Back open or closed makes no difference to rewind operation on these cameras. Turn the rewind switch and crank away. Does the claw that grabs the spool of the casette turn? Does the sprocket roller release? That's all you need to know to be pretty sure it rewinds ok.

Yeah it did rewind, the problem was under tension of a roll on and spooling on the catch on the right side.
So I wanted to fire one or two shots and see if there was too much tension to wind then...which there was.

It seemed fine until a roll was on, so a sacrifice has to be made 😆
But I have a screwdriver that will fit now, and I'll try to save the Trimax roll one shot in a dark basement while testing my blind dexterity
