Hi all. Got a beautiful Canon P here a few weeks ago and it has cloth shutter curtains as opposed to the metal ones typically (by me at least) seen. Serial number of mine is 733301. I checked my Dechert book and our head bartender's site but no mention of cloth curtains or the serial number range for them. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Interesting. I tried to get a Canon P repaired once with the crumpled curtains to be replaced with cloth curtains. Mark Hama took the camera, and my money, and has never returned either.

V Series and prior Canons had cloth curtains. 733xxx serial number is mid range for a P so my guess is that it is an after market change.

Don't forget Ralph that the VL, VL2 and the VT deluxe VTDM were some of the first Canons in the last of the V series that had factory installed metal shutter curtains.

REALLY?

.

Yes - I did document it here once, but the thread has disappeared.

Serial 701003, purchased ebay in August 2005, seller sent it direct to Mark Hama at my request. I paid US$213 to Mark on 12 Jan 2006 (Paypal Transaction ID #0EE7975837062142R) at his request. After a further 6 months of phone calls and emails Mark told me it was not repairable and promised to refund the money and return the camera. Nothing heard since and didn't respond to phone calls.

Sadly the experience soured me on the P cameras and I sold my other two, and moved on. I did try for a Paypal refund but by the time I realised I'd been taken, it was too late. One of life's lessons.

Chris:

Sorry your hear of your bad experience w/ Hama. I had a similar problem w/ him w/ a Yashica Lynx about 6 yrs. ago. I got it back, but the repair I paid for was not done.

Actually, I think they can. Somebody on the Canon sub-forum reported pin holes in/on the curtains of their Canon P and Joe Lippincott, in his book on camera repair, mentions that pinholes can be found on titanium shutter curtains.

What Back alley is talking about is the sun coming in through the lens and burning the cloth. Think burning ants with a magnifying glass. I doubt it gets hot enough inside a camera from the sun to melt steel or titanium (we're talking 2500F for steel and 3000F for titanium).

If you're burning holes in titanium or stainless steel, you probably have worse problems than a light leak (like you just got hit by a solar flare or you fell into a vat of pig iron at a steel mill...a volcano might do the trick, as well).

I'm quite certain you are talking about pinholes in metal shutters formed by the metal crinkling. Go take a pop can and crinkle it up. You'll get pinholes on the ridges. That's probably what you're talking about.

That's what I'm talking about too, sun burning holes in metal curtains. I've heard about this more than once throughout the years but, admittedly, it's only hearsay. Still, I do know that somebody on RFF reported pin holes on the shutter curtains of their P. And Lippincott's mention of this makes me wonder too.

Since titanium has a melt temp of over 3000F this is not likely. At most the rubber coating will melt exposing the titanium curtain..

Nobody's doubting there could be holes in a metal shutter. I just think you are very, very incorrect over the cause. Since the stainless curtains are known bend and crinkle with very, very little effort, I do not believe it to be outside the realm of possibility the stress on the metal could cause holes in the curtain.

And rust never sleeps.....

The curtains are stainless steel, and do not rust. I have had around 50 Canon P and Canon 7 cameras, some with no wrinkles, and some which were terribly wrinkled, but they all worked.

I have also had dozens of cameras with cloth shutter curtains, and the great majority of these were still in good working order. But a few did have holes rotted through the cloth or through the ribbons.

Damn Frontman , and me feeling all smug having three Canon P's !!! Damn 50! Well my three all work pretty good. No holes - but one was owned by some salty-dog as it's showing brass where it was handled, everything works good. Sure like the P's.
