I'm looking for a backup for my canon 7 - Canon P for $200 a good price? (On the "auction site").


I've seen them go for less but I'm wondering what the standard going rate for. Seems like Canon 7 goes for less than that even.


Seems like basically the same thing as a Canon 7, but without the meter, but with an accessory shoe (I have a meter I can use).
 
It will depend on the actual condition of the camera obviously. If it is I good condition and not in need of a CLA then $200 is a good price. Since a CLA could cost you even more than the camera you need to be sure of the condition.

Much different viewfinders. The P uses reflective framelines, while the 7 uses projected framelines, like a Leica M. With the P, you see 35/50/100 framelines all the time. With the 7, you dial in the frame you need.

Different magnification, too. Canon P has a 1:1 viewfinder, and the Canon 7 has a 0.8 viewfinder. Might make a difference if you wear glasses.
 
It all also depends on how good your eyesight is...a Canon P Viewfinder could have a lot of extra internal reflections after 60 plus years...bearable when you have the good eyesight of a young adult but not so good with poorer eyesight of someone in their 60s and 70s. The Canon 7 VF despite its nearsighted-ness from the factory is much more enjoyable to use for us older folks.
 
It's not too difficult to find a perfectly working P for closer to the $100 mark if you have some patience. $200 can net you a working body + 50/1.8
 
Canon P is the camera I should, probably, have gotten instead of M4-2.

Might be the camera which ain't need backup.

They are actually cheaper to buy now than they were 10 to 12 years ago.

How many threads you have seen with elaborations of light leaks and else with film M? I have seen way too many. Mine film M is just one from many. Nothing special, nothing uncommon with it.
I don't have P, I have RP now :).
It was my initial mistake, I think. Not to get P, but prestige film M. Well, I was very patriotic with M4-2 purchase. :)

I've seen your photos of Canada made with Canadian M and liked them all.
No light leaks there as far as I can see.
The reason I was asking is because I myself also have M4-2 and honestly wouldn't trade it for anything :D
 
I sold my Canon P last year on one of the other forum's classifieds for $135.00. I probably could have sold it for over $150, but I'd been letting go of a lot of 35mm gear and wanted to sell reasonably quickly to a fellow photographer and not a reseller. Cosmetically and mechanically excellent, with just the usual curtain wrinkles which have no effect on the camera. For a screw-mount body, these are much easier to use than the Leicas and are still very high quality. $200 seems a bit high, unless it's in pristine condition and just received a CLA.
 
I bought a Canon P with 50/1.8 for a bit over $200, and it's a lovely camera. Canon VI-L would actually be closer to being a Canon VII without a meter, whereas the "P" incorporates a simplified finder w/o parallax correction. Definite feeling of quality, though the chrome plating is kind of thin.

The Canon P does have parallax correction.

I'm going to question if the P is the right 'backup' for a 7. They are rather different cameras in ways. The P viewfinder is not very good for 35mm lenses. The 7 viewfinder is much nicer all in all. The P is smaller, maybe a bit 'denser.'

Why not just get a second 7? Moving from one body to another will be much easier. I've had and used both, and both are nice in their ways. But the differences are, well, real.
 
I've owned a couple of these. Yes VF is not ideal for 35mm lens users,
but overall the Canon P is a very well made solid and simple camera.

If I could find one in excellent condition with clean viewfinder and bright
perfectly adjusted RF patch I would not hesitate to spend $200 now.
IMO prices on these should only go up.
