i am biding on a canon p with a standerd 50mm lens how much do you think i should pay ?, and how do i teel it is not a fake ?

Many Thank Kane .

Yes max bidded 350 but i live in uk and its from japan hope dosent get damigid in post ect i cant spell sorry im only 15

many thanks kane .

The P is built to last, but you might need a CLA (cleaning, lubrication, and adjustment) to get it in perfect working order. I doubt it has ever been faked--it's not the kind of lucrative collector's item that some Leicas are, and there are a lot of them out there.

I wouldn't worry about it being a fake, the cameras that fakes are made to look like are Leicas. I would worry about it being in the condition that the seller claims it to be. I'm not saying that your seller is dishonest, but it's too easy for people to misrepresent (OK, LIE about) the condition of a piece of equipment, especially from 10,000 miles away, and especially if they know you are 15 yrs of age, sorry to say.

Get the description of the condition from the seller in detail, and get pictures. Someone that may be dishonest will usually not want to bother to give a buyer extra emails describing condition, nor will they send detailed pictures unless it's in good condition. If someone can't be bothered to maintain a dialogue with you, then forget about buying anything from them. Also get a return guarantee, altho that will be expensive for you to mail back to Japan.

Unless you can be sure its a good deal for you, limit your bidding or wait and buy from a seller here or an actual store in the U.K. Like just about anything else, they do come up here regularly, just be patient.

The only thing that worries me is that he cleaned the inside elements of the lens and might not have reassembled them correctly. A good repair person coukld easily fix that. This would give you some out of focus pictures. If you get the camera check the focus WITH FILM at the closest distance (one meter) and infinity at f/1.8. While you're at it check the shutter speeds by changing the lens aperture and see if the negatives all have pretty much the same density.

Canon cameras and lenses of that era are pretty close to Leica quality, and some of them just as good. You'll still be shooting with it when you're 50 years old! Good luck on your bidding.

Kane,

Go ahead and bid what You have to on this auction. I have dealt with this seller before, and he's honest and honorable !!!

The camera and lens is certainly a perfect start for you into using rangefinder cameras ;-)

My guess is that this auction will end around 400 USD or a bit more...

Yes, this set looks to be in pretty nice condition. In any case, better than mine. It might go higher than $350, especially now that you've put us all here on track 😉.
I hope you'll get it in the end. Let us know...

the canon p is a great camera. it's really fun and they are built like a tank and probably will not need service if it was looked after. that one looks to be in great shape. most of then have wrinkled shutters (it's thin metal) from people poking their fingers into them. they work fine with wrinkles still, but this one doesn't have that problem.

see pictures of my old one that i sold to get into m-mount... http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=6374

if you don't like the 50 f1.8 (mine had some haze, flared, and was soft wide-open but a lot of people love this lens) you can get lots of great screw-mount lenses from cameraquest that have a modern look and quality. the 35mm frame lines on the canon p were impossible to see with glasses, fyi.

good luck and have fun! i hope you develop and scan your own black and white cause film is getting pricey to buy and develop now...cheers

I totally agree that the P is one, fine foolproof (and idiotproof) camera. If Canon made a metered one today, it would outsell everything else on the mkt.

The Canon P grows on you somehow. My beaten up P made me neglect the M3 and a mintish VI-L. I traded off the VI-L and got another P instead. It is my workhorse over the years.

Interesting comment about VI-L vs. the P. I have been contemplating the VI-L, but highly value your opinion. Since I already have a P, I think I'll save my money and abandon that idea.

Thanks,
Bill
