Hi all,

First post here. I recently bought a QL19, ran a roll of both color and B&W through it and fell in love. Based on this I bought a QL17 from the same source (both were in pristine condition) and repeated the test. Now I'm absolutely in love... I don't know why I didn't look into Canon rangefinders sooner. I haven't shot anything other than tests up to this point but I'm looking forward to using these two cameras often.

Digital has kind of taken the life out of making pictures for me and medium format is great but the issue of lugging a Subaru sized camera around has lost its appeal over the last couple of years. I can see how shooting with the Canon will get me back to the core of why I shoot film in the first place.

I too am new to this forum, and a longtime owner of a GIII-17, along with a late seventies Canon F-1 as my "serious" camera. I recently had the F-1 repaired and have shot several rolls since, rediscovering the fun and creativity of photography. I've always been sold on the lens quality of Canon- every bit as good as Nikon. The GIII has a great lens on it too, as well as some versatility- a wide shutter speed and aperture range, manual override, etc. A well designed camera. It has been with me on hikes and camping trips when I wanted to travel light, nothing against the F-1, the tank that it is. . . .

About the GIII though- the clickstops on the shutter speed ring don't "click" so well anymore. I can just barely feel the clicks, which makes me think the piece inside is wearing down. . . maybe not a problem- the unit seems to be firing at the correct shutter speed if the dial is positioned in line with that speed, even if I don't feel the click. I suppose a dial position in between the nominal speeds is not something the camera was ever meant to have to deal with. . . anyway am I correct in thinking that even if the ring doesn't "click", I'll still get the shutter speed on the dial?

Also- is there a forum here for the great little Minolta AF-C? I have one of those too. Even more portable. . . . .
 
I love the Canonet so much I now have 3 QL17's and 1 QL19 all bought from the same dealer on ebay. Each one of these cameras is about as perfect as the age of the camera would allow. I can't say enough good things about this camera and the positive effect it has had on my shooting.

As long as the speed number is lined up with the mark it will be correct.
The detent notches have worn down from use, no biggie.
 
Hi All,

I'm a new QL-17 user and posted First Pix in the Canon RF Forum a few days ago. The 40mm focal length is great, and I like the discipline of working with this wonderful
f1.7 lens... no option to change lenses. And no, I can't catch a face on the far side of the coffee bar, but there's so much I CAN do with this 1972's genre RF.

BTW, what's a QL-19?
 
Here's a quick shot from last night. The restaurant was very dimly lit, but I managed to get this shot of my daughter. This was my QL17 with Ilford XP2 developed at Walgreen's and scanned this evening. I more that I need to pick through and scan.

Hi Ash, I really like the feeling of this shot. I have the QL17 as well, but have been procrastinating by not having shot it yet. (I slowly pick through my pile of film camera's when not shooting digital.) Don't rush me though, I've only had it a couple of years now. ;)

AshenLight - great color shots, they're very sharp.

I'll have to try a color roll with my QL19, I've only shot B&W so far.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I find myself using the QL17 and the GSN to the exclusion of almost everything else these days including my digital SLRs. I bought my son, who is currently on his second tour of duty in Iraq, a QL17 for when he returns. He's shot mostly digital except for slide film with his F-100. I think he'll be very pleasntly surprised.
