Hi,

My QL17 G-III seems to have a focusing issue. Outside, on a bright sunny day, if I focus on a vertical object such as a light pole, I realize that I can't get it lined up in the yellow patch. I would need to rotate the focusing ring a tiny bit (maybe 1 degree) more counter clockwise. I am already maxed at infinity and can't go any further but in the patch the pole is out of focus by a tiny bit.

I understand there is lateral (horizontal) adjustment that's adjustable beneath the hotshoe and can be accessed without removing the top cover. I am not opposed to removing the cover since I've done it before without much trouble, but if I am able to make this adjustment without doing so, I'd like to.

Unfortunately, I can't figure out exactly which piece I am supposed to remove and how. I looked at a few diagrams and there are at least three pieces. None of them look like screws or something that can be moved. Can anyone help me out with a really good explanation or a picture?

Thanks.

The silver U-shaped plate that you see when you look down on the hot shoe comes off. It's basically clipped on at the front and back edge. Look close and you'll see how it attached. From what I remember, the rear clips can be pulled out a little with a tiny screwdriver and it will pop off. You'll see a small hole underneath for the horizontal adjustment.

How does the U-piece come off exactly? Does it slide back towards me? I tried nudging it with a metal mail opener but it wouldn't budge.

I know about the rear adjustment port (lower left of hotshoe). I believe you use a pair of pliers and unscrew it.

Thanks for your help.

The piece is basically thin, flexible metal. It bends around underneath the hotshoe a little. See if you can get something small like a larger needle or very small jeweler's screwdriver under the edge of one of the ends of the U, and pull it out towards the back of the camera, parallel to the base of the hot shoe. Think "Tupperware lid" if that helps.

When you buy a Jon Goodman Light Seal Kit...

When you buy a Jon Goodman Light Seal Kit...

Not only do you get pre cut, self adhesive seals for the Canonet QL 17.. but you get a well written, range finder adjustment instruction with photo examples.

$12... Last I saw... about a year ago.

Jongoodman@Aol.com.

as I recall. I've used a number of his light seal kits... easy install well documented through out plus the rangefinder adjust sheet.

Yeah, I know you got it...

Perhaps someone else can use this contact link.

I've done a half dozen Canonet's with Jon's kits. Even has a bamboo tool/chisel for cleaning out that gunky gummy crap.
