Say, does anybody know right off hand where the serial number on an older QL17 is?

Reason I'm asking is that there's one on Ebay where the seller said "owner's personal information has been removed" and it looks like where a serial number might be, or maybe used to be.

If anybody's curious, here's a photo of it, if I can get a link to post properly here:

Thanks in advance, gang. :)

The serial number on that camera is stamped onto a black plate and fixed to the camera back. It is visible in your photo. Look on the back just below the rewind release button. In your photo it is upside down.

Thank you. I guess I should have looked harder. I didn't want to bid on something that was obviously altered.

I think the scratched out area on the camera bottom might be a driver's license or SSN. The Seller might mean that the previous owner's personal ID information there has been removed by defacing the plate. On an unaltered QL17, that part of the plate should be clean.

If you don't already own one of these cameras, it's pretty hard to know where Canon placed the serial numbers.

I have a feeling that a nice GIII is going to be up for sale here very soon...
You may want to wait for one from a fellow member that has been CLA'd...

That is an old Canonet QL17 bigger than the new GIII Rob mentions, and would be a better camera to get, why dont you save the money to get an GIII from one of the guys of the forum instead of going after a camera that may cost you 20 bucks but will leave you the feeling that you should have gone for the new one. From the state of the camera seen on the picture I've seen same model in better condition.

Good luck in the search of your camera, and take your time.

PS the SN was erased from the plate.

Thanks for the responses everybody. I'm just kinda looking at options right now. This is one I saw with the obvious grinder work on the bottom made my a bit curious and suspicious. :)

What I was really looking for was another one like I had years ago, a Mamiya Super Deluxe 1.7, but I'm looking at the Canonet 1.7 as a second choice. (If anybody has one they want to get rid of, please let me know.) Yes, I think I would like the smaller one better.

Now that I know the model of the one I once had, I've seen a few of them on Ebay, but they were either the slower lens, overpriced, or somebody else wanted them more than me.

I'm somewhat familiar with the Canonet line. We gave my dad (who swore he would "never go 35") a QL25 after he retired, and he (eventually) said it was the best camera he ever had. I think my stepmom still has it, and I could probably talk her out of it, but I want that extra f-stop.

Thanks again, everybody. :)

Hi,
I have just finished "restoring" a QL17 GIII and was about to put it on eBay. It will make a good user. It is in nice condition cosmetically but not a pristine "as new" collection model.

Send me a PM if your are interested.
