I have file down the side of one black Tiffen adapter (aluminium) to get it like chrome in color.

Tom, I have checked my stash of Canon accessories, and have both black and chrome versions of the hood for the 50/1.8 and 35/2.8 lenses, as well as an extra clamp-on ring. The clamp-on adapter ring in question is marked Canon Japan, 42mm A.
I would be happy to mail the ring to you to see if it fits (it should, I have the same black hood that is shown in your posts). If it fits, it is yours free of charge. I'll even throw in a really beat up chrome hood and leather case if you are interested. Send me a PM with your address.

Left the black hood with a black Tiffen 40mm > Series 6 adapter
Right the chrome hood with the Canon 34mm > Series 6 adapter in front
