Need help on removing the film advance crank lever in order to remove the top of the camera. Help is appreciated.

If it is like a QL17 (old school large version), I beleive it is, you can do the following...

You will need to immobilize the rewind crank and knob by inserting something in the slotted shaft that fits into the end of film canisters. A small wooden dowel or something softer than the metal in the shaft will work. While holding the shaft still, turn the rewind lever counterclockwise (as viewed from above). That should unscrew it.

I think he/she means the advance lever and not the rewind crank. I just did this on a QL17 GIII and it did give me trouble. I tried using one of those rubber jar openers, but I couldn't get enough of a grip to get it to unscrew.

I very carefully took a dremel tool and drilled two very small indentations into the ring. Then I used the spanner wrench to unscrew the thing (bolt?, I don't know what it's really called) that holds the advance lever in there. It does not really look that bad, actually.

I use the rubber foot from a bar stool. Actually go buy a new one at Home Depot. They come in at least 5 sizes, Get them all. Each one can be adjusted to different sizes by cutting the center portion out with a pointed Exacto knife.

Sometimes inserting the proper size woodd dowel in the open end also helps by giving a firmer grip.

Push down on the center of the wind lever and wiggle it back and forth to loosen it. Some cameras use right-hand thread and others are left-hand thresd. Wiggling it first will give you enough motion to figure it out before you strip something.

that silver ring around the shutter release is actually a screw. Griping it with masking tape or even adhesive tape will help you screw it out by hand (you do have a vise like grip, right?). It should turn counter clockwise to screw off.

I have used one of those rubber jar openers that banks used to give away. Kind of a textured rubber square about 1mm in thickness. Or, if you have those blue gloves for dishwashing or cleaning, those can work too.

Greyhoundman's suggestion will work as well. Just treat it tenderly and be sure to wrap the jaws as he described.

Thanks very much. The silver ring was the key to it. I placed a small strip of duct tape all around the ring, and used a small pliers to start the turn, then it unscrewed easily after that.
