Canonet 28... oops a bit fell off!

Hi y'all,
I'm hoping that this thread might cause a little interest if only just to give me some advice, help or comments!

I was only going to renew the light seals on my canonet 28 (it hasn't been used in a couple of years or so) - the upper slot/rail was getting difficult to clean out properly, so I decided to take the top cover off... all good, no probs... THEN.. at some moment a piece off the front (see pics) fell off 😱.. okay - it's not too drastic: just needs a re-glue 🙂

Anyway, thinking ahead: the focus ring movement is pretty stiff and if left in any position for a few hours, when going to move it again, the first 'shift' is kind of 'sticky' - uh oh methinks - the lube is definitely in need of renewing also.


I've looked through various threads on dismantling the 'canonets' and all seem to say pretty much the same thing: they are probably one of the worst to work on 🙁

Anyway, I want to do this servicing myself (although I've got a couple of other projects/tasks 'on the go' at the moment). In the meantime, I'll be trying to decide on what lubrication will be best, try to find a repair/service manual for this little cam, and decide which glue will suffice for the re-glue!

I don't think this is "glued" into place. Are there any signs of the old glue? It is a while since I did a 28 but on most Canonets, the rings are either kept in place by the outer ring etc or are screwed into place.

Thanks for your reply.

My first thought was that the piece might have actually broken or snapped off somehow, but because of the residue (see attached pic) and no clear evidence of splits or cracks, my guess is that it was originally glued on in the first place. Further more, having a closer look at the three screws below, I can't figure out any other way of getting to them without taking this piece off first.

BTW: Excellent pdf summary of your DC.... I've got a few other little tasks, reseals, re-covers, AND some cleaning, lubing, etc.. that I want to do myself. I've read many of your threads and info, and they've been of tremendous help! ;-) I've started to do a similar 'information guide' (http://goldfinga888.blogspot.com) but my posts need to be re-edited for a clearer and more detailed 'step-by-step'
