I was at the local 2nd hand store, spotted a camera in a worn case, and somehow knew it was a Canonet (I was hoping for a GIII). Turned out to be a plain jane Canonet 28. It was cheap, so I bought it. It was very clean, except for some gummy light seals, which I will replace asap. Meanwhile, I though I'd test it, so stuck a 625 alkaline battery in it and a 36 exp roll of Kodak B&W 400.
Whoa! This is one sweet shooting camera. The prints I got back were tack sharp, good contrast and exposures were right on (assuming the lab did some correcting I forgot to tell them not to). I did a few test shots with flash and they were great, but the ones shot in natural light were outstanding. I compared them to a roll shot at the same time on my pre-war FED (which I love), and the Canonet won hands down. The only other 35mm camera I've had that turned out images as sharp as this little gem was a Zeiss Ikon Contessa folder that I just sold.
Bad news is, now I just gotta get a QL19 or 17. Sigh.
Meanwhile, I'm thinking I'll pick up a bunch of Canonet 28s and give em to my sons youth group for a photoethnography project.
