Canonet GIII QL17 - can use modern Canon flash?

Hi,

New to this forum. Have not got a Canonet yet. But got a question. 🙂

I read that the Canolite flash is the most compatible and fuss-free to use on the Canonet. But being such an old item, it is hard to come by.
Can I use my EOS Speedlites such as 200EZ, 430EZ, 540EZ on this camera? If so, how to get a right exposure?
Or any suggestions for a 3rd party flash that is as fuss-free as the Canolite?

The Canolite came with my GIII but I have never used it. I would sell it, but I'm sure that if I did I would then need it for something.

However, it's my impression that any totally dumb flash will work fine with it using guide numbers, or that any non-ttl auto flash will work with the GIII as it will with any other camera.

I've got several Canolite flashes.. I don't think they're that hard to find.. just gotta ask around, I suppose.. I'm sure I could be talked out of one of mine, since I've never used any of them

The canonet does have a plain old hot shoe, so any flash will fire. The problem is getting the right exposure. However, as long as you have an auto flash, and keep your subject in the right range isn't still not particularly difficult.

The issue, in my opinion, is that the canonet is so light that most modern flashes are too big, making the setup top-heavy.

These are great little flash units. I've seen them on ebay for around 30 dollars. I paid 10 for mine at a camera store. I used my canonet flash on my FED5b this past weekend and it worked great. I tried it on my canon AE-1p and it would not work.

I have a simple bounce flash unit with a tilting head that has auto settings. It's far lighter and more compact than a Vivitar 283 or similar flash. I don't need it so if anyone's interested just let me know.

I used a Yashica Flash from the 70's on mine. Use it in manual, bounce flash and over expose a couple of stops to allow for lose of light with the bounce and you will do fine...
