Canonet Lens Hood

Hi All,

just wanted to share a pic (hopefully I attached it correctly) of my Canonet with a HOYA 48mm Lens hood threaded onto a 48mm UV filter.

It makes the camera look cool, and helps with flare and does not create any halo or vignetting. I recommend one, obviously...

it's a little hard to tell from your pic, but is that a round hood?

i also have a round hood (screw on 48mm) for my Canonet, and i find that it blocks too much of the viewfinder window for my taste. i haven't used it since the day i picked it up. 🙁

isn't there a square/rectangular hood for the 48mm or 49mm size?

yes it's round, and I haven't noticed much blockage, but a square one would be nice too although I've never seen one.....

there is almost always a rectangular one for sale on ebay.

The factory lenshood for the Canon GIII was a clamp on with a cutout so that none of the viewfinder was blocked. I just sold mine to a chap in Australia (along with 2 Canolite flashes and 2 scruffy looking cases and a near mint camera). What I thought was neat about the lenshood was that it was round with a small flat on the bottom (so that you could set the camera down level and not have it tip back because of the lenshood) and a larger flat on top (that matched essentially the top deck lines of the camera).

yeah, i had heard about the "notched" lens hood - i tried buying one from eBay. turns out it was for a "different" canonet - it's wider than my whole lens assembly!

Just be patient, one should show up if you wait a while. I got mine on ebay as well.

Don't recall who on the bay sold them, but I picked up an inexpensive combo unit with UV filter/rubber collapsible hood/lens cap. Takes up no extra space like the slotted hoods, is minimally invasive in the viewfinder (if at all) and extends with a quick pull, and protects the front element. I bought one for each of my QL17s.

There was two types of lightweight plastic hoods -Types 4 & 5 for the GIII QL 17 series smaller bodies - one round, one with top and bottom edges levelled off making it look more 'square'. Both were notched and vented. The round type is shown here from the manual (p26)

I find the generic screw in's tougher and more secure, and there is also a collapsible rubber type on a skylight filter available, seen here

The simpler Canon round 'steel' types are for the earlier versions of the camera and just had the notches for clearance over the focussing lever - enabling the hood to be reversed on the camera while travelling, as the above.

I have the round notched version (type 4?) and the rubber type with skylight. The rubber hood blocks less, but is probably too short to be very effective.

Should I search ebay for the brand "hoya" or do other brands make hoods for the canonet?

And do you recommend the round or square lens hood? The round one looks like it blocks less of the view.

I have the EXACT same hood on my GIII as the original poster! Have had it there for about 2 years.

I've pleaded w/ heavystars to come out w/ 49 and 55mm vented hoods (like the 40.5mm he sells), but to no avail.
