Ultra normal. In practice, only the meter of the Olympus SP35 work in manual mode, in all other similar compact cameras of the seventies, in manual mode, don't work thde meter.

Ricoh made 500G/500GX/500ME to meter in manual mode, that's where Ricoh shines - they made and still make cameras for photographers not weekenders only

In real life I prefer meter switch on body, easy to reach with single finger, over meter running all the time.
