Hi everyone,

I got a Canonet QL17 lately, and it has the following problem :
After I close the film door, I can wind and shoot 4 times, then the winder gets stuck (the film indicator gets red, like if the film was wound up and I can't wind anymore, but the shutter won't work).

After each 4 first wind, I can shoot if I want (which shows that the shutter is ok), and the selftime seems to work normally (I can use it for each shot) <I saw it some people had a winder blocked because of that>.

I saw someone had the same problem here some time ago, but it didn't really help in my case, cause the cause of his problem seemed to bethe backdoor which didn't press the counter reset enough, and I try to slip some cardboard for it to press more without any result.

Has anyone encountered this problem before or has a lead on a possible solution ?

Thanks in advance !

ps : Note that I haven't tried it with a real film or with a battery yet (but I'm not in Auto mode)

Does this only happen when you load film? Can you proceed past 4 exposures without film in the camera?
Is the pressure plate sitting correctly on the film door? Does it look slightly tilted up or down? Is there a crease or dent in the film door (It may be slight, not easy to notice.)
If the film is not tracking straight it may be jamming in the auto loading mechanism (if your QL17 is a model that has that feature)
Other than that, I’m stumped.

As suggested above, does the advance work correctly with no film in the camera?

Just a guess, the rubber film take-up pads on the QL mechanism are now decades old and, at times, have lost their stickiness. So the film isn't feeding onto the take-up spool, but bunching up. That will stop winding in its tracks. The solution is to dab a bit of rubber cement onto the take-up pads.

Well, I haven't tried to put any film in the camera yet ! For now, I was just trying to make it work without any film.

The door and the pressure plate (QL cover as they call it in the manual) seem damageless. Nevertheless, sometimes (pressing the counter reset button or not to fake the door being open or close) winding doesn't make the driving axis turn, for a reason I don't know...

If I press the pressure plate (QL cover as they call it in the manual) against the film advance axis, it works the same.

My guess is that something in the mechanism gets stuck when the counter reset button is held, preventing me for shooting : but what ?

This is the GIII model?

There is a little lever in front, behind an access panel under the leatherette to the right of the lens, that decides whether to let the wind lever advance or lock it up. This is a little fussy, if it's too far one way it will lock up and if it's too far the other way it will just keep winding on without locking after advancing a frame. It's adjusted by bending. Not sure if this is your problem, and I don't know why it would let you go 4 frames and then lock up, but it's a possibility.

Hey, thanks for your answer, I didn't see it. It's not the GLIII model, but the Canonet QL17 original. I guess this part of the camera is the same though.

I'm gonna check again that wind lever lock (I didnt remove the leatherette yet). About it locking after 4 frames, I believe it's because the 4 first frames don't lock on this camera (in order for you to burn the first pictures after loading a film).

I was just looking at some old scans of mine that I shot on my Canon G17 GIII and was pleasantly surprised how well the shots were. They were color shots and they were so clear.
