Canonet shutter lag question

Hi everyone,

This is my first post, but I've been lurking about RFF now for awhile.

I had a question for other Canonet owners (I have a QL G-III). My Canonet has a pretty bad shutter lag, and I wonder if this is normal or not. I've searched around the 'net and RFF, but could not find anyone else complaining about it, so my guess is that it shouldn't be as slow as it is...

When I say shutter lag, I mean like 1s shutter lag. You press the shutter release and can literally say 'one-one-thousand' before you hear a 'click'.

By comparison, I also have a Yashica Electro 35 GSN, which is very fast--zero shutter lag; you press the shutter release and off it goes.

Can anyone with a Canonet comment on the shutter lag? Even better if you have a Canonet and a GSN and could compare the two in this regard..


Also, if this is not normal... can anyone recommend a place to have it serviced to get it up to spec?

i didn't think about that... but you're right! i just set the camera to some random fast exposure, i.e. 1/500 and watched the shutter... and indeed, they do appear sticky.

can anyone recommend a place to get the camera serviced?

I, too, am located in Northern California and just had two Canonet QL17 GIII's CLA'd by Greyhoundman. He was fast and a real pleasure to do business with so don't hesitate to send your camera off to hiim.

I just got my Canonet back from G'man, and am quite stunned by the difference a CLA can make on a camera... I think I gave him a scare when I didn't even recognize the camera anymore. 🙂 This was my first CLA, so I didn't know what to expect.

Anyways, I really appreciate his work and wanted to let everyone know that if you're in need of a CLA for your Canonet, and if he's accepting cameras, he's definitely someone I would recommend.

You'd be surprised at what a good CLA can do... I didn't like the Canonet before, didn't think it was very usable. Turns out the camera just needed some attention from someone like G'man.
