I just bought a Canoscan 9000F (new) and I have installed all the supplied software. I tried to scan a dvd cover and it turned out fine. But then I tried to scan 2 film negs and got terrible results. I had them compared with the results from the same neg using lab scanner.

The colors were off, too dark, not sharp, and of very low quality.
I wonder what's wrong with my scanner (or me)?
I've tried to play around with the settings but it seems I've been running in circles. :(

what film edit software are you using, what computer, OS?

What slide/neg trays are you using?

Subscribed because I was thinking about getting this scanner.

Having a Canoscan 9000F since last june, with Silverfast. I find the results OK for publishing on a forum or Flickr. For printing I find it's quality mediocre, despite scanning on highest resolution.
Think a flatbed scanner will never beat Coolscan-like scanner.

It's probably in your scan settings. Go back and read the manual throughly, and it should list some examples of your current problem and probable remedies. Times like this google search can be your friend :)

Scanner Driver from Canon. As I mentioned in my post, I have installed all the supplied software from Canon. I use a PC w/ Windows 7.

I used the trays that were supplied with the scanner. I dont know if there's any third-party for the trays?

Well I'm not a professional so this scanner should be enough for me. I bought this because I found the scanning cost at the lab too high so I decided to save some money and time by buying this.

I have re-read all the manuals, tried to change every setting, and googled it but I haven't found any cure. Maybe I should contact Canon. I'm really disappointed. :(

Hmm... I get very good results with my 9000F.

But:
- I only use it for medium format negatives (have a film scanner for 35mm negatives), and
- I use the Silverfast software (that I knew from the other scanner). I very briefly tried the Canon software and did not like it.

Which software do you use?
And you do use the negative holders, do you?

I used Canon's software. Why did you not like it? Is it because of the interface or because of the quality of the photos you got?

I had a 4400F before so I'm pretty sure I'm doing it right. :D

The first (and only) 2 scans I made with the Canon software were not very good and the software crashed repeatedly while rotating an image. So I went back to Silverfast.

It's nice anyway to be able to use the same software with both my scanners, and while Silverfast's interface may be weird, the quality of the scans is very good.

I downloaded Silverfast demo for Canoscan 9000F but it seems that I'm confused with the versions of the software. First I downloaded the Silverfast Ai and found that it has no film neg scanning option so I downloaded the Silverfast SE but I still don't know where the application is, is it combined with the Ai?

I did not download the photoshop plug-in version but it is the demo version so I don't know if the film neg scanning option is not available for the demo version?

Sorry, can't help you there. My 9000F came with Silverfast SE included. Through my filmscanner I already had Ai; both versions happily coexist. And both scan negatives, of course.
