I use both G1 and G2, and I do think that G2 advantages are significant. shooting in rain or snow the G2's VF doesn't fog as fast as G1's does. I use lot of hyperfocal focusing and it's easier done with G2. G1's focusing wheel tends to shift. Istill prefer G1 as a back-up body when backpacking. While not much lighter/smaller, it does make a difference.

When SHOULD it end? When you save enough to buy the G21
When will it end? When you sell a kindney for the 16mm and a compact TLA flash for TTL, the rest of the G lenses and a Luigi case in newborn baby seal skin...and by then you should start suffering severe GAS pains for something altogether different.

When I want to shoot 35mm these days there are only two cameras I tend to pick up, the Contax g2 and the Hasselblad xpan...

The Contax G system was nice, the lenses terrific, but didn't appeal to me enough. I went back to Leica Ms after I sold mine and was much happier again.
But I agree that film still has its particular look and charm. I have done a tremendous amount of digital capture work that I'm very satisfied with, and yet I still like working with film for its specific and delightful qualities.

I've been working with my G2 28-45-90 for a couple months and I'm very impressed.
I actually find that the focus is opposite the Canon 5D (that I sold for the Contax, no more digital here) in that the G2 works far better in low light and gets confused in bright conditions. I'm a Canon CF#4 advocate and am used to the focus-recompose shuffle. I shot a wedding last month with it and I'm blown away by the rich, 3D results. I was, however frustrated with my inability intuitively focus in the right area for a lock in bright sunlight. I often had to try 2-3 times to make sure the camera selected the proper plane. That said, out of 7-36 exposure rolls of Portra, I had 9 unusable frames due to missed focus. The 90 is simply amazing. At the dim reception, the focus was lightning quick, accurate with the lenses wide open and I was more than impressed with the often ***-pooed TLA200.
I'm now intrigued by the 35 and 21, but even more so the Contax 645.

I own 2 G2's, each with a GD2 data back (came with 'em) and 21/2.8, 45/2, and 90 Sonnar. Luv em both, one with the 21, the other with either the 45 or 90. I echo ya'll's sentiments about the G2's construction, feel, ease of carry, AF is the equal of my X-E1. I'm mostly deaf 😀, so the AF "noise," such as it is doesn't bother me 🙂

Can't properly comment on the G2 and 21mm combo you have but I just got the Zeiss 2,8/21mm ZE for my 5DIII and I love it. I got mine used at a great price $1200 but they can be had fairly easily at $1400 used. It manual focus of course but its worth it to me.

I was having the same excitement when I bought a G2 over ebay and 45/90 combo over RFF until G2 turned out to get broken in 2 days due to a fault in the focusing system. I also sold two g1 bodies in the past and made myself forget about that system because of the faulty focusing. I did not have luck so far with G system. I want to give another chance to another g2...
The 645 is delicious. Especially with the 80/2 and the 55.
