Car broken into, equipment stolen

Gold Methodist cross with diamond. Chain was broken and left in car to take to jewelery shop to repair. My girlfriend really is saddened over the loss of this as it was a rare item given to her by her mother.
Experiences like this make you feel so violated. So sorry and so sad. I too have an item similar to this from my mom (a WWII survivor from Italy - made it through the bombings of Monte Cassino/Gustav Line/Anzio Invasion. My dad bought her this crucifix in Rome in the '50's and she gave it to me to wear for remembrance) and can only imagine the pain and loss your girlfriend is experiencing. My thoughts and prayers to you and your girlfriend that you may find some peace soon...

I suppose home and contents insurance is as widespread in the US as in Europe - but the thread starter is a photo journalist, and professional equipment is usually exempt from out-of-doors coverage.

This depends on your insurer. Shop around and you can find some good deals with excellent coverage. My business insurance covers all of my gear both nationally and internationally ( on the proviso it's a business trip and not a holiday,) plus it's covered if stolen from my car ( so long as the car was locked,) and having gone through all the small print there's very little to worry about. I pay a little more than some other insurance deals but I know from (sad/annoying personal) experience that the payout will be quick and easy allowing me to get back on the job before losing any further business.

Swoop, I hope you get your kit replaced and back into action nice and quickly. It's only worth being upset about the personal stuff, the rest is just equipment and can be easily replaced (...so long as you have it insured, which is paramount if you work for yourself at all!)

+1. Usually (at least here in Canada and I think with some US carriers as well) Cameras and other items used for business isn't covered, or there is very limited coverage (and only on premises). Of course, mileage varies with each carrier.

So sorry to hear about the OP's loss.

+ 1 to what Our Man in Tangiers and Double Negative said. I work in the insurance industry (so I especially like that Double Negative r 'read the fine print' 🙂 I wish more people would do that)

I'll write down the SN, and keep an eye on the local pawn shops and the "unofficial street flea markets" - some of them have definitely a lot of stolen stuff...
good luck

Ebay & other sites should require one to register the serial # when selling a valuable piece of equipment. Don't know about NY, but here stolen gear is least likely to end up in a pawn shop. Too many in the past have been arrested after doing so because the pawn shops work so closly to the police. Good luck with getting your gear back. As one that has had a car stolen before I know your pain. BTW I got the car back a week later. When I opened the trunk I found all sorts of tools like bolt cutters & such. I called the police they said they would send someone over. That was 4 years ago & I'm still waiting. I still have the tools!

Dude this sucks man. I'm sorry to hear that. But listen keep your eyes open on craigslist man. People are notorious for selling cameras and gear with no boxes , cords, etc. Good way to narrow down your thief. They are probably looking to sell it quick and craigslist would be the way to do it so just check it out.

Just sucks. But also watch out with the insurance, cause those guys can be thieves just as good. Many won't cover theft from cars, or will talk themselves out of having to pay up when they do. But you really do need something to cover the pro gear especially if your newspaper doesn't already.

Eh, if people would just stay off other peoples properties...!

If there's no business insurance on gear and something happens, you're pretty well pooched. Not sure how much more it would cost to add coverage but it seems prudent instead of rolling the dice, for those considering the pros and cons of biz coverage.

I will offer that it's someone who might know you, perhaps not personally, but they know of you.

They've probably watched you come in and out of your apartment loaded with gear. So, they probably guessed that you might have something of value in your trunk, and you did.

possibly the local meth addict.

possibly the local meth addict.

or maybe the local poor guy who saw an opportunity to finance his kids next meal

or the local camera saviour, he saw how badly they were treated (left in a hot/cold car, possibly to be stolen by the local meth addict) then decided to liberate them and give them a good and caring home.....
