I thought some people might be interested. Pay close attention to the rights issues some people might not like the terms...

This year’s theme is “Every moment tells a story” Photographers and photo enthusiasts from anywhere in the world are invited to approach and capture this contest theme from their own unique perspective.

For its 2011 photography competition, Carl Zeiss is looking for that moment in which you do not see a subject, but a story. “We’re looking for images of that very special moment,” says Martin Dominicus, Head of Marketing for the Carl Zeiss Camera Lens Division. “Every life, every situation and every place is full of stories that take place in a split second. The ability to capture that in such a way that you recognize the story behind it — this is, and has always been, the high art of photography.

The pictures can be about anything. They can show people telling a story through their facial expressions or charm. They can depict a story in nature, whether shown through the sun, water, mist or frost. In exploring the theme, photographers can go to the limits of their imagination. There are also no rules in terms of style. The images can show bizarre, mysterious, funny or romantic situations. Photographic techniques such as the conscious play with focusing or blur can be used, as well as light/shadow or black and white photography. The most decisive requirement for this competition is that the photographer captures a magical moment that has character and tells a story.

What is the final Round?

What is the final Round?

is it the top 10 images or something else?

You give them a photo for a (Zeiss) lens cleaning Kit and a mention that your image was 10th place?

Or is it that they take hundreds of images as the "Final Round" and just use them to sell lenses and stuff and as part of their edit clause never need to credit you?

I know I am being outrageous but it sounds suspect to me!

Welcome to the wonderful world of photo competition. Actually this is better than most because you do not have to pay to enter.

IMO the usage rights are pretty common, I don't like them but hey... they're trying to make a buck out of (your) 50 cents ;)

Competitions are usually promotion opportunities for the companies. The best way to leverage it is to use top pictures in advertising, even if that is just a matter of showing the winners. If they want to display anything, they need a license.

That's just the cost of the participants entry. Terms not worth it, don't play. Simple enough. :) I don't buy lottery tickets for the same reason.

Edit: I wonder if this automatically disqualifies street photos without releases at they couldnt use them for advertisements.

The marketing department probably don't know what M-lenses are or that they make them.
