Carrying cameras - suggestions

All right, a nice camera bag is good if you are lugging around one or two cameras and some lenses, a flash and some assorted stuff.

BUT..... if you want to travel light, I thought about having the camera on a simple strap or a sling (a wrist strap would be impractical because you'll eventually want to put the camera out of your hand), and a small waistpack clipped to your belt, for a second lens, batteries, filters etc.

Someone using such an outfit?

Then again I'd like to use some Black Rapid breed of sling with the X-E1, but the tripod mount is too close...... you know the routine! Is there a way to attach the camera to such a sling using one of the strap lugs?

Neck strap, wrapped around the wrist. One lens only. A spare card in the shirt pocket. Leica M9 goes like this 95% of the time. Same with the film Ms. Hate extra gear. A battery/roll of film can go in a pocket.

Gordy's Camera Sling over shoulder & extra film in pocket. Don't need anything else. Sometimes a lens in a pocket.

if you want the black rapid effect then use a round camera strap...like the lance strap. it glides so easily!! and maybe for small stuff, the lowepro terraclime 50...small enough to stuff into a pocket when empty and has a nice long strap to go over the neck.

I use the 60 inch Barton strap for Camera, then a belt pack to hold 3 rolls of film and a Lowe's belt lens holder for my 90 mm lens. I am on the go!!

I'm a big proponent of carrying cameras slung across the chest "bandolier"-style (or like a shotgun or rifle if you're so inclined). It's easy to bring up to the eye & doesn't bounce around as much as just having it around your neck like a pendant; also has the advantage of letting you free up 1 or both hands when you need to carry something else, like a tripod, stand, or drink(s). For that reason, I'm definitely not a wrist strap person.

I can see the advantage of the Black Rapid & similar sliding systems & know people who use them successfully w/mammoth dSLR body + lesn combos, but I doubt their effectiveness when used on comparatively small RF/mirrorless set ups & having the camera hang upside just seems weird. Of course, I could be totally wrong, but I think my bottom line is that regular straps are fast enough for me, including the cord-based types like the Lance back alley recommends. I plan on trying Artisan & Artist's strap that has a D-ring quick adjustment option ( http://www.popflash.com/ACAM-E25R-BLK ).

I suggest a man-purse of some sort, and your X-E1 on a wrist strap. Put it away when not in use, but ready when you are. I hate things in my pockets -- phone, wallet, keys, batteries, glasses, etc. -- so they also go in the bag. Not too fashionable for men in American, but that's OK.

It's easier in cooler weather when you can keep things in a jacket pocket. I usually use one camera with a Domke neck strap (wide with good rubber grippiness) plus spare lens and film in a pocket. 28mm on the camera, a 50mm and roll of flim in a small Ziplock back in a pocket. Another lens, more film, and a light meter in cooler weather when a loose jacket with big pockets is possible.

I'm with you. Hate having stuff in my pockets ... only a very small wallet, cell and car keys at most, but usually carry some kind of bag to hold all that junk.

A Street Shooter or Lance neck strap wrapped around my wrist is how I'm usually carrying the camera when I'm shooting, around my neck or bandolier style occasionally for the small and light cameras (X2, GXR with a small lens, CL). Otherwise the camera's in whatever shoulder bag I'm using.

I like carrying a camera either with a wrist strap or across the chest. Each has its time. So I'm using the Op/tech system. I attach the pro-loop connectors to the camera. You can clip the two short peices together and make a safety/wrsit strap. I can carry a TLr or a Leica M3 for hours like this. At rest, you can use the strap as a bit of sling with the palm, giving the fingers a rest.

I have taken the other part of the strap, the center neoprene section, and thrown it out. Well, after I cut off the buckle connectors. I then sew the buckle connectors to 3/4 inch webbing- sleeping bag straps are a good cheap source. Add an adjustment slider, a few minutes with thread, and I have a 'bandolier' strap that is convenient. And it is small, crumples into a small-ish ball. I can put it in a jacket pocket or knapsack easily. Then pull it out and re-connect when I am done with the wrist strap.

I have basic padded bags to hold a camera and such in a knapsack if that is needed for later. So my camera is either stored, or it is available for shooting. No middle ground of being readily accessible in a bag.
