Those panels on the tailgate were covered in a wood grain application of some sort. The use of real wood was in days bygone at that time.
Later addition. I may be wrong. If that was a pseudo woody, there should also have been some raised surrounds on the side with the simulated wood applique on the sides of the body. Don't see those... at least on the front fender. ???
