It was a spectacular trip. I really had a great time. Low points would be riding in a car for 12 hours and having my friend get stuck in immigration for over 6 hours and almost deported while I had many high points one I liked the best was drinking vodka in a madrasa with some locals at 7AM in Samarkand in the middle of ramadan.

I am a big fan of Nate's work.....I enjoy drinking beer and hanging out with him too....he is a cool guy and a talented photographer..

I'm also a big fan of Michael's work. He's a great guy and a blast to have some beers with. Thanks for the compliment. I'm really enjoying your latest Myanmar shots. I'm still waiting for some of the shots you got from the red shirt fiasco before you flew home.

Ah, I missed this thread, would have liked to see it earlier. (I've been working in Central Asia since 2003, spent a lot of time photographing and know several local photographers.)

Anyway, good shots!

(The Aral sea ships are interesting because they were actually towed there for a documentary; the originals had been sold for scrap long ago. The "Karakalpakia" ship was repainted after being deposited there.)

None of them are original? This is the first I have heard of this, but I did know about the repainted ship.

As far as I know they are all original in the sense that they are Aral Sea boats, but they are not from the port of Muynak.

The "cemetery of ships" in Muynak is a bit artificial (signposted in English and everything), but of course it's very symbolic - the whole thing is more about the symbolic value than about the authenticity of each individual ship.
 
I ran out of time to make it out there. We had to rush back to Tashkent to fly out. I wish I knew you were in Kyrgyzstan I would have loved to meet up.
