moderator said:Yes, the programmer, mods, and head of the RFf all know how V Bulletin works.
And yes this has been discussed in the past. We do not encourage it however.
I don't work in PHP, or use VB, but if a "hack" could be written, which would survive future upgrades, I would think it might be considered. But as many of you might know, hacks often come back to bite you, especially in PHP.
What is likely to happen -- no more mass deletion of posts when a member leaves the RFF, it is a PITA for us, and causes disruption.
I haven't been suggesting a hack, although I do agree that vBulletin being able to handle deletion of the first post of a thread and keep the rest intact would be the best solution.
My feeling is that, given the sometimes hefty consequences of deleting a first post, the best thing to do is to simply disallow deletion. If there is still an obligation of sorts to allow a poster to remove their content, I would probably post a sticky article somewhere with clear instructions and leave it at that.
I certainly don't think it's the admin/mod team's responsibility to do it for them, or to laboriously explain how. Can only bend over backwards so far, especially when the lifeblood of the forum is the hundreds of people that are sticking around and posting rather than the occasional disgruntled one that's leaving.
Yes, the current setting skews things so that the unstable ones are the ones making the call...

Everything ends at some point. Nothing is forever.
So agree...its not like these posts are prized manuscripts waiting for the New York Times best sellers list.
If someone freaks out and wants to delete their posts why not? Maybe the blogger figured out his/her post added nothing to the discussion. Its self-correcting.
Is it a good idea to let those that freak out make decisions for others? Many of us have lots of time invested here. It's a shame to see it destroyed in an instant.
And then the perpetrator(s) look in on these threads with evil satisfaction.

what?
I don't understand nor appreciate the complexities of managing this forum's software. Honestly (but friendly) nor do I care.
But no one , no one but a mod should have the privilege to edit or delete any posting by another forum member. It's kind of an outrage, actually.
If it's not easy to change the software, then the first task is to change the software to make it easy to change it.
PS: I also think that people who have deleted "their" threads that include inputs from many other members should be banned forever. Or maybe just a few years. Or months.

I just noticed that what are normally considered moderator tasks have been enabled for regular members under Thread Tools (copy thread, move thread, delete thread.) This is visible in threads that regular members create.
I'm a member of many forums (photo, cars, reefs, motorcycles, bikes, firearms, etc.) in addition to owning one.
Of all those forums, RFF is the only one that allows:
post editing with no time limit
post deletion
copy thread
move thread
delete thread
Many of the other forums are significantly larger than RFF so it doesn't appear that not having these features has affected membership.

Just pointing that out, it's up to the individual to decide if it's a good thing or not.

I recall another rangefinder site that was rigid in the application of it's rules and eventually lost it's leadership position and are little more than a footnote today. They backed off after the mass exodus; however, the membership was decidedly gone by then and the site never returned to its former glory days.
Posters should continue to be allowed to delete/edit any post they make whenever--they are free to come and go (novel concept)--except they should not be able to take down the entire thread since others have posted.
If rules are posted--and they should be clearly posted for all to read--that say all your posts are hard-coded forever it would not improve this site. In fact it would probably have the opposite effect. The more educated the poster, and many Leica owners are well educated--the more options they will value. This is the age of the internet, live and let live!

Pretty cool policy huh?
Depends on the definition of 'cool', as Bubba would say.
It's certainly cool for the scorched earthers!

Thankfully most people realize that a poor disposition won't get you frigging anywhere period. I suppose all of us slip every now and then maybe which is probably why editing stuff is a good thing. Human condition?
I know I have been glad to be able to delete dumb sh!t I have posted and boy there has been a time or two when I wish I would have done something different all together too...especially on the internet...poor Dave...

The change is wonderful news..
Sure someone may feel like leaving,
due to a feeling of harassment,
but killing years of others work, is crummy.
welcome the change! i gotta start posting..

This thread in my opinion went off topic. It was to me just about keeping threads alive where a lot of people contributed in. I don't think it is up to the thread starter to delete the thread once other people have participated: as a forum is a community, it belongs to the community, not the thread starter.
I'm fine with people deleting their own posts, but exclude thread starting posts. If it is impossible or impractical, I would like to hear just that!

I hope I don't get flamed....but I like the ability to edit and delete posts/threads.
But frankly, I wouldn't make a fuss about it if I loss that privilege.
