Hi, I've seen various advice related to changing aperture/shutter speed after winding the shutter.

Specifically I'm wondering about a Minolta Hi-Matic 7S; I've accidentally done this a couple of times. Is the damage cumulative, or can it potentially cause something to actually break? Is there some tolerance built in that allows this to happen a few times without major effects?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this applies only to Leica screwmount cameras and their copies. Contax might also be subject to this rule, but I heard otherwise. It has to do with slow speed mechanism being damaged. Minolta 7S uses electronic leaf shutter, and you can change its speed whenever you want.

I think it's advised for those, to change the shutter speed ONLY after winding. However, I'm wondering if it's OK on the 7S to change aperture or shutter
speed after winding. I don't think it's recommended, at the very least.

*Edit I didn't actually see your statement about the electronic shutter, that's good to know.

I've used a Minolta 7s for years and never read or heard about changing speeds only after winding. I've done it both ways and it's still taking pictures to this day. I've never used it on auto as my meter seems off. :(

With a leaf shutter you can change the shutter speed at any time. A few leaf shutters require you to set the speed before cocking - but this is relatively rare.

The advice about setting shutter speeds after winding pretty much only applies to older designs of focal plane shutters which utilize a lift and set, rotating knob. Such as screw mount Leicas, Kiev MF SLRs, and a few other oldies.
On the other hand there are some such shutters that can be set before or after winding, such as on the Prakticas and early Mirandas.
