Just got the email and read through the links. I have to say if the camera is half has good as the way they've chosen to market it, it's going to be a hell of nice camera.
They really seem to be doing things right.

They are really selling the sizzle, aren't they. What a bunch of overblown hype.

They are even raving about the precision of the front of the case! lol

I'm afraid we're partly responsible for the hype hitting this level. We've totally validated their behaviour with our unceasing excitement.
I really really want to read this, but I still can't get past the "camera as metaphor" paragraph. I keep throwing up a little bit in my mouth.

If you read all the parts it's as if they sat around reading this forum and designed the camera around people's bitching, from the viewfinder to the the bokeh to the type of covering of the body to the feel and machining of the knobs.
I'm having trouble seeing how it can be a $1000 or less though. The hype level seems about $1500-2000.

Well, what do you expect the designers to say? I don't think I've ever recalled a company saying, "We decided to produce a product that is going to be just average."
Of course, they're going to say that they pulled out all of the stops to create the first of its kind, etc., etc.
I hope that reality equals the hype, or there are going to be a lot of disappointed users. That also could mean some real bargains six months down the road.
I do find the camera very interesting. Not interesting enough to buy new, but very interesting.

I didn't get past the first paragraph. What a bunch of BS. Besides, what they're talking about is not a metaphor but a synecdoche.

I think it is too much hype already, hope it won't be a disappointment when it comes out, particularly in image and build quality.

I'd say it's more a kind of emotional transference from everyone's idealized object of aspirational desire to the camera that they're trying to elicit, so I don't think synecdoche is the right word either. It should be "The Camera as Antidote to a Father Who Refused to Share His Expensive Toys".

Whereever there is hype I lose interest.

I don't think it's hype because...
a.) I don't think they gave out a presscon saying "We have updated our webpage! Check it out!"
b.) a fellow forum member posted the link. You would never have found out about this if tapesonthefloor did not post it (unless you're really hunting for X100 info).

Well of course it's neither as a camera is not a figure of speech. The sentence "The camera as a metaphor." is a simile but if they want to use 'camera' in order to evoke "'tool for taking photos' and 'anyone who sees it, immediately associates it with capturing high-quality photos.'" that's not a metaphor. It's a synecdoche or perhaps a metonymy since all the notions they're trying to evoke with the camera are from the same semantic field (photography) whereas using a metaphor usually means taking something from one semantic field to stand for something from another semantic field.

I'm just going to sit back and enjoy this twist in the conversation, as discussing the semantics of metonymy is a favourite pastime among my friends.

The copy on that website reminds me of nothing so much as... Leica ad copy.
Still, I want one.

That's my feeling as well. I'd be more interested in a 50mm equivalent lens version but still not enough for $1000 new. Maybe $300 ~ $500 range but no higher.

The best camera is one that still works!
The way they bang on the artisans who created the legendary samurai swords are obviously being channelled by Fuji's design team.
I'm impressed. (but sickened a little also)

Doesn't look like hype to me. The same stuff one would read in a product brochure from any number of camera companies going back many years.
I think it is good they are pointing out details that differentiate their product and design from others. What else does one expect them to do?

even the simple act of attaching and removing the lens cover becomes a pleasurable experience
The camera's fondle rating is 11+ ... and that's on a scale of ten!
It is nice though I have to admit ... and if you squint a little it becomes a Leica M.
