I, too, am saddened by the news. I knew John had periodic issues with his health, and he would be absent for awhile before returning. I was hoping he would return this time, too.

I always valued his posts, and from what I could tell about him as a person, I liked him, too.

Thanks to John Bragg, the OP, for bringing the news back to the RFF community.

I feared this when you first enquired. Thanks for sleuthing it. Good to notice his absence and reflect on what he added to RFF. Eighty: a good innings but sometimes considered young these days. Certainly a gentleman and never bought into the combative threads. That's three notables I know have gone from RFF and others too not noted. That doesn't matter really. But it's good to have this thread.

Thank you for posting this sad notice. I talked with John Carter frequently, if not regularly, and realize now that I hadn't heard from him in more than five months. He was always a gracious and fun person to entertain ideas with, generous with his time and his thoughts. We traded a bit of stuff over the years on our shared passion for instant film and laughed over many a funny misstep that both of us made. A fine man, a good memory to have. I'll miss him. Godspeed, John Carter!

What a sad new... I hope he rest in pace and condolences to his family.

This new makes me think on a lot of things, but in this case, in special, in the "rff-friends" that I'm knowing little by little... and I value "it" more and more.

I have been meaning to contact John after reading about his absence from RFF, but couldn't locate the note I had his address on. Last year he had sent me a defunct Leica 3 meter as just some ornamentation for my IIIf, and requested a photo of it on Flickr. This was the result of that request:

He later sent me a note after I sent him a copy of the photo:

"I received your card and photo. I put it on the refrig, but my wife said no. Now I have in my 'study.' Thanks very much, I guess you printed it at home, nice job.

Carter"

He had also commented on Flickr about the photo that it "Reminds me of my good old days."

That was back in July of 2021. I was glad to have at least given him some joy. Always wanted to go pay him a visit, but between my medical issues and the pandemic that became something to schedule for sometime in the future, which now will never happen. He was a good guy, and I enjoyed our little interactions over the years.

Save me a spot at the coffee bar, John.

So, what do I know about John Carter? He was a member of RFF. He was always a regular contributor to the current threads; usually posting photos from the good old days. He was knowledgeable, well behaved and most of all he was kind and courteous. I’d like to pause and reflect on the fact that John was always “kind and courteous”. In a world where the internet has turned many of the nicest people into jerks, opinionated a-holes and worst of all… bad neighbors! John Carter never bought into that BS. He managed to stay above the fray and be a gentleman.

I can’t claim to be a close friend of John’s. We had a few exchanges on the forum, I noticed him, maybe he noticed me, I don’t know. Sorry to see him go. God bless and…goodbye. Didn’t know him so well ‘til he was gone. That’s the way it seems to go in this internet / forum world, very sad.

Very well said. I have not been one of the nicer ones at times and a great guy like John passing and having an honoring of his gentle spirit gives one reason for pause.

I had a bad feeling when I came across this thread...I considered it an honor when those I have a high regard for posts/replies to something I've done....Charjohncarter was high on my list...sad day for all...his comments will be missed...

Thanks all for the kind words and reminiscences of our friend John. As OP I had to think carefully about what to say and you all have done John proud. His Flickr is still active and I drop in sometimes, half expecting some new content. He always managed to maintain a certain style even when using the humblest of cameras. He was a skilled home developer and had many kind words of encouragement for those starting out on their film journey. He certainly encouraged me many times. It is good to honour him here and to learn from his abiding example.

Oh No!! This is such sad news. I got the sense that John was having health problems in recent years, but he seemed very private about these. I admired him immensely. He was such a kind person and a master at film development. I was inspired by his approach to film processing. The photos he posted here were masterpieces of tonality. He will be greatly missed.
