The aperture ring on my jupiter8 is driving me nuts. its too loose. always gets reset to the wrong settings.
I read that what I need is some moly lube. I looked at the microtools website: 23 dollars for a little tube!! Is there something similar I can get for 5 bucks? I just need it this one time hopefully.

thanks for the tips!

Hi,
I wouldn't use wheel bearing grease, it tends to spread and cause problems. I have a big tub of synthetic grease from Mobil that works very well. All you need is a good quality fully synthetic grease, lithium based ones work well. I would suggest a visit to a bicycle store and see what they have. Put a dob on a piece of paper, check that the dob keeps it's shape and doesn't produce a large stain spreading stain on the paper.

You want a thick grease such as wheel bearing grease so the ap ring will stay put when you set it. An alternative would be teflon grease from Radio Shack in a tube, cheap..............

Hi,
I have found it easier to use a normal lithium based grease rather than thick wheel grease. I start by applying a little and then add a bit more at a time if the AP ring is too loose. The more you fill the threads the more resistance you get. I avoid the heavy wheel greases as most of these contain oil which seeps out over a period of time and ends up where you don't want it. The tub I got came from the aviation industry but the bicycle type lithium and teflon greases work as well.

I went to a bike shop, he didnt have that much choice, but I got some white grease with teflon. so I guess thats the right kind. thanks for all your help!

Many greases for bike chains contain mineral spirits that gets the grease into the chain and then evaporates, which would be bad to happen inside a lens. Tri-Flow makes a grease that does that.

Radio Shack's Multi-Purpose Lube Gel is quite sticky and works pretty well on the J-8 aperture ring for me. White lithium grease is a lot smoother--works well for helicals.

You could also g to a hobby store, one that specialises in radio control model cars or planes. They sell all sorts of greases , even a molybdenum grease. I know the compant Tamiya makes this type of grease, but unsure of the price.
