Hi all (hope this is the right forum!)

I'd like to get a hood for a Summaron 35/3.5 (114xxx) that will be used on a 1.5 crop factor camera (Fuji X-E1)
I'm assuming the 1.5 crop factor would allow for a longer hood, am I right?

So, would a FISON (for a 50/3.5 Elmar if I have it right) be optimal?
I know the right hood is the FOOKH, but twice or more the price of the FISON.
I read here at RFF that a FISON will vignette with a Summaron on full frame, just wondering about it on a 1.5 crop context.

I don't need a Leica hood (too expensive) so maybe one of those plastic hoods for the Industar-22 (50/3.5) would be right?

The ideal would be small, cheap and most efficient having a 53mm FOV once cropped by the sensor...


Also, I guess no filter can be used on the Summaron once the FOOKH, FISON or Industar-22 hood is in place.
So, is there a way other than getting a SOOGZ or SOOTF, then 39mm filters and hood?
I mean a cheaper way of using filter+hood.

You don't really need a hood. The front lens element is recessed far enough that it makes very little difference if you use a hood or not.

You also make the lens harder to use with a hood on it.
 
I'd expect a FISON to work with a cropped sensor camera.

Edit: Which version do you have? I was assuming the unthreaded, unrecessed LTM / A36 version for some reason. 🙂
 
I have a 1954 one, 114xxx, LTM. So, Brian, I think you were right , LTM/A36 : )

Kermaier, how do I attach a screw-in hood on an A36 front? It works anyway as snap-on?

Ah, you have a lens with no E34 filter threads? Then you'll need an A36 clamp-on hood like a FISON or FOOKH. (Or use a SOOGZ A36 to E39 adapter, with either a 39mm screw-in or A42 clip-on hood, but that's overkill.)

Can filters be used with FOOKH or FISON on? Or, will those two hoods clamp over an A36 filter?

Would an Industar-22 hood work (fit and vignetting)?

I have two versions of this lens. One is LTM and takes a 36mm filter. The other is M mount and takes a 39mm. For the latter (which I think you have????) I use a Leica one mainly - the same one used for the 35mm f2.8 and various 50mm f2 lesnes of the era. But as you say they are a bit expensive to get ahold of. I bought a plastic rectangular Russan hood that was cheap and looked good on e Bay but when I got it I found it to be cheap and nasty - which I half expected. Soft flexible plastic and barely held on by slip fit - but with too little "purchase" for it to hold properly. It was junk that would have fallen off and been lost at its first outing - probably the best thing for it. Although mine was rectangular it looked to be made of similar plastic to the one in the photo you posted. So whilst it wont cost much to buy, neither, I think, will it do the job.

I certainly would not go down the Russian route again.

However there is at least on further option, possibly two.

All of the following applies to the 36mm diameter version of the Summaron but there will be fewer hoods to select from in eBay. Never the less there will be some you can choose from especially if you are patient.

There are presently lots of screw mount hoods in metal on eBay that can be picked up for $5 -$10. Dirt cheap, metal and well made. They are made for 35mm and 50mm lenses. But they are more like a contemporary / modern style hood. I have bought a few of these for various lenses in various diameters including 39mm, 43mm and 58mm. All were cheap. All were well made. All worked fine.

Go the category: cameras/lenses/lenshoods in eBay and type the search term "39mm". You will probably get a dozen hits. Also being sold from China - no postage or hanlding costs!

Another alternative you will sometimes see is a slip fit hood or clamp fit hood from 1950/60 era older cameras. I have seen them from Walz and Voigtlander plus various others. Sold as such on eBay. Just remember though for clamp or slip fit hoods you need to look for a 42mm diameter slip on / clamp on hood as its the external diameter that is relevant in the case of this type of hood. Try typing those words in eBay.

That's why I'm looking for options...

Maybe most practical one is SOOGZ, as advised many times, but it's expensive for what it is.
Maybe using an A36 filter as a base and a ring with a 39mm thread on top something can be assembled...


BTW, I'd like to know the weight and size of the SOOGZ if someone knows...

as an update...

Hood:

I found locally a cheap SOOGZ so I got it. And then still experimenting with hoods.

What I'm using now as a hood, on the SOOGZ, is a lovely 42mm diam. clamp-on tubular hood Sankyo branded (made in Japan).
No vignetting at all on APSC (X-E1), and I adventure it would work well on FF too.
I've seen more on eFly, not unobtanium.
There are many other 42mm clamp-on hoods, most of them conical.

The good thing (to me) is that you mount and unmount the hood fast vs screw in hoods.
I use the Summaron with no hood too... mine it's coated and the SOOGZ + 39mm clear filter act as a small hood too...


Cap:

It was not easy to find a cap for SOOGZ+39mm filter (I use a b+w 007 clear filter always on)
The cap has to be 42mm diameter but deeper than usual, so it can reach the SOOGZ bellow the smaller diameter 39mm filter. It has to be approx. 7mm to 10mm deep, which is not super easy to find, but possible.

Another option is to just use a 40.5mm diam. cap over the 39mm filter. Then you want a much shallower cap.
What I did at first was to use a 41mm diam. cap with some camera tape inside and it worked perfectly well over the 39mm filter, but since it can't go all the way in because of the larger diam. of the SOOGZ, it protruded unnecessarily, that's why I searched for a deep 42mm cap to go over the SOOGZ.


Hood also works on:

The Sankyo clamp-on hood can be used on the Summitar and on the Jupiter-8 too, although it could be longer for this lenses to be more effective.
On the Summitar I have to clamp it on the Summitar's front rings since Summitar-to-E39 filter adapter and 39mm filter are of a smaller diameter, so I'm "loosing" some of the hood by clamping it down there. Also be aware Summitar front diameter is more like 41.5mm, not 42mm.
On the Jupiter-8 I clamp it on the 40.5mm filter (42mm ext. diameter) so no hood is lost, pretty cool.


FSU hood with no filter:

Of course, if you are brave enough to use the Summaron without a protection clear filter (I'm not) the small and beautiful FSU hoods for Industar-22 will work very well, at least no vignetting on APSC and they are small and very light. Black plastic, slip-on, conical, cheap, pretty looking (to me)
You can use FSU A36 filters and this hood. It should work on Leica A36 filters too.


I'm pretty happy with my Sankyo hood, but wonder if the ITOOY will work and be more efficient, since it's tubular and slightly longer...

I'm using a 007 clear filter but it may be useful also for M8 users using UV/IR cut filters, since the filter it's permanently attached and one just mount or remove the hood.

I had not read closely enough. What I would do is simple if I were in your place. If you already have the SOOGZ adapter (and I presume it is appropriately threaded for 39mm filters given this is its purpose) ebay is full of inexpensive metal (but quite well made, functional and not bad looking) hoods for 39mm leica fit lenses. You can pick them up for a few bucks. Just find a style you prefer. The later M mount 39mm version of this lens takes Leica hoods more or less of this type. You can find on eBay either the vented type or the non vented type (cone shaped) and either should work.

Alternatively try the hood linked. I like the look of this and I think despite the depth it will work with a Summaron 355mm on a cropped sensor camera. I have one that I use on a few different lenses including a 40mm Voightlander lens - it works fine at that focal length on a M4/3 and Sony NEX camera- no vignetting. This lens has a 43mm diameter fit. That extra diameter gives you the space you need for a 35mm lens to preventt vignetting. But it means you will need to also buy a 39mm-43mm stepping ring (a couple of bucks and readily available on eBay).

It will give you a small, discrete and quite appropriately looking hood.

Thanks for all the info. I did all the "research" : ) because I didn't want to use a 39mm screw-in hood.
I wanted a clamp-on or slip-on/push-on hood that was cheaper, smaller and lighter than Leica ones.

For now, I like the look of the Sankyo hood and it's very efficient. So, happy.
It looks not unlike the FOOKH (even it's size) but it has a thin silver ring and then a black tube. It clamps around the SOOGZ instead (the rim of the 39mm filter is not fat enough)

BTW, Minolta have similar slim 42mm clamp-on hoods (D42) that should work as well, different lengths.

The 42mm FSU black plastic rectangular slip-on hood for Jupiter-8, Industar-61 and Industar-26 may also work over the SOOGZ for APS-C
