The Highline is a public garden/park. There are benches all over the place. Great views of the West Side hwy, Jersey, city streets, and the Hudson River.
It was an old elevated train track in the meat packing district. From what I understand it was unsightly to transport goods through the front doors. They also did not want to cause additional traffic, so the track was elevated and deliveries were made through the backs of building. It finally went defunct in the 1980 (I think). For many years after that it was just an overgrown 'lot'.
About a year ago construction was completed in the lower (roughly 14 st to 23 st) section. They plan to open this space up to about 34th street.

And (a more accurate) history here: http://www.thehighline.org/about/high-line-history
A fun place to shoot, but it can get packed on nice days. Barrett's backup plan of visiting galleries is a good plan b if it does indeed get too crowded.
Would love to join, but I think I may be out of town. Have a great time!

Amy, you will love the highline. Hope you're starting to feel better. sounds like it's been pretty awful.
Hey all... I've been pretty sick and not around much lately, but I'd love to try to make this one...

Darren,
Keep us updated so we can plan a date that is convenient for you to attend.
Seems like I have another old-new Rolleiflex to send to Harry Fleenor, your neighbor, in Manhattan Beach for a CLA and screen upgrade, when I have the money. LOL Yesterday bought a Tele Rolleiflex (first version) in E++ condition. The shutter is slightly slow at long shutter speeds.
As far as this shooting meet-up on the High Line, I guess the gear thyme can be "coolest shooting rig" and "coolest small kit." I can't help myself being a real New Yorker: Inately I want to be hip, but I am also competitive.
Who will have the coolest rig? Who will have the coolest kit?

I'm going to bring the most un-hip of set-ups in the world... the dslr!

Perhaps we should have another gear related competition for entertainment purposes: The most un-hip rig. LOL As you know, I have a particular taste for odd cameras; ie Linhof fetish. LOL again.
I once bought my Nikon F3P equipted with a MD-4 motordive and a 105/1.8, a 6-7 pound SLR rigged as a weapon to show Jeff (also known as a fellow Nikon slut). Although a SLR, this camera was cool because it was a real press camera that returned from Operation Desert Storm, and once was owned by the newspaper "Newsday."
Disclaimer: I only own three Nikon F3's and only four Nikon lenses.

I was scouting around last Saturday. Found some boxes that must of fell off a truck. Three boxes were of condoms and another was of lube. Didn't check the invoice. Two boxes of condoms were opened. One was sealed.
An interesting story/mystery, but not a good photograph.
This is a bump.

Well the truth is that I was considering creating a rather spontainious mess to create a bizzare/cool shot on a somewhat abandoned street in Chelsea not far from the High Line. It wasn't like I was liberating condoms from a loading dock. Perhaps I should of taken the unopened box as a conversation piece or wrapped it up to give to my boss who is a jerk. LOL. A lot of creative potential for an artistic statement went unused. Damn.
BTW if I made a mess I would of cleaned it up.

You should know me by now. I'm still joking.
I was a kinda odd/cool situation that is amusing because it doesn't happen everyday. When was the last time you found four cases of condoms and a case of lube?
I guess I'm just a lucky guy. HA-HA.

Now I'm broke because of you. I bought a Mamiya 6MF in like new condition with a 50/4.0. I wanted to keep shooting the square, but I also wanted a wide. Not the same, but in a way a rangefinder is better for the wide.
Because of you I'll have to do more push-ups. My arms aren't so skinny anymore. LOL. Carrying two rigs all day is not a problem, but three is a workout. I'll bring all three cameras to the next Meet-Up, if you are going to show up.
