Chipped paint on J 12 rear element

Hi just saw it.
Can it be repaired with a sharpie or do you have to apply matte paint?

I am guessing a Sharpie or any black coating (paint etc) will be fine, as matt black paint on glass will appear as shiny on the other side.

I painted mine with a felt-tip black pen, the type that is used for writing on glassware (is that a "sharpie"?). Two coatings did the job.

A very small nick on the paint will not result in anything disastrous. It can be patched with, as suggested, with felt marker tip pen.

Better to use is flat black latex paint. Water soluble, easy to apply and equally easy to remove if it gets on places where it shouldn't.

Something to consider about using ink from marker pens: The ink may not be as opaque that what it covers remains partly transparent. Second is, when using alcohol-based lens cleaning fluid, the ink will be erased, and possibly be passed on other surfaces as the wiping material goes over them.

Has been helpful. Yes a Sharpie is a felt tip pen (I did not know that name very logic)
in German we use the name "Edding" to describe them.
Latex paint seems imossibly hard to come by here. Strange but true!

I have some flat black paint left over from refurbishing hoods, so I used that on my J-12 where the lens had bumped into the R/F cam follower. I'd also advise against ink because of its translucency.

I've used automotive touch up paint that comes in a small tube and is applied either by the built in roller tip or brush. Fries fast and seems to work.
