I am able to purchase a chrome m7 at a good price but i have only black lenses.Do other people mix and match between the two?

Some folks get quite tangled up in this issue and others could care less. My personal opinion, and nothing more, is that a chrome camera looks good with either black or chrome lenses (so you'd be fine with that M7) while a black camera generally only looks good with black lenses. That being said, I have a black M6 that I put chrome lenses on and you know what? Takes the same pictures as a chrome M6 would... ;-)

I like the look of chrome on chrome, but cannot afford it, so, my chrome cameras deal with black lenses. Of course, my black Leica NEVER carries anything but black lenses.

But, more seriously, chrome Leica lenses are heavier. The only advantage, I think, is that chrome lenses are not anodized aluminum (they're chrome-plated brass) and thus, are not subject to chipping of the black paint. The chrome can rub off with use and time, but it's generally more durable. I like the look of my chrome Elmar on my Chrome MP. But the black summicron is happy there too.

HCB routinely mixed a chrome M3 with black and silver lenses. As well as his black M4 with chrome and black lenses.

If my M7 sat in a display case, I wouldn't care what colour the lens was. If I'm USING my M7 I reeeeaallllly don't care what colour it is. Only time it would matter would be if the lens and body were somehow some kind of related-serial-numbered-set or the LHSA MP3 or something.

Looks aside, there is a difference.
* Older chrome lenses and modern chrome Leicas are brass and heavy. However, chrome on brass is very durable and I like the weight and look if I don't have to carry too many.
* Black lenses, whether anodized or painted, will eventually chip (unless you are compulsively anal or don't actually use your equipment). That being said, chips don't hurt anything except pride of ownership. Plus, since they are almost always aluminum, they are alot lighter.
I have both and mix and match as required. Any combination looks cool in my eyes.
However I do agree that chrome may be making a comeback. As visiondr said "chrome is the new black". I especially like the silver paint aluminum mounts by CV and Zeiss as the sctatches don't show.
From a purely esthetic point of view, a nicely worn black painted, brass lens really rings my bell. Mild brassing on a matching lens and body makes me feel like putting on a beret and smoking a Gauloise while setting outside a French bistro.

I have a chrome M6 and it has a black 40mm cron. Looks fantastic and takes bloody good photos. Black on chrome always looks good, but chrome on black.. not so good. You could always get a custom paint job if you dont like it. Bright yellow looks good! 🙂

Ditto my black M5 and chrome lenses. All black would be loverly but I'm not ditching my very nice chrome lenses for the sake of matching one black body. If I wish to make a fashion statement, I have two chrome bodies. I'm content with the Zebra pattern of black hood-chrome lens-black body. Contrary to white, chrome lenses are acceptable after Labor Day.
