Civility?

Since Roger Hicks brought to our attention an email written by someone who probably suffers from Tourettes Syndrome I've become increasingly aware that there's a subset of contributors who seem to lack a reasonable degree of civility or restraint in their postings.
I'm seeing comments directed at other posters saying things like "your photographs suck..." and mixed in with it all a degree of personal abuse, criticism, sarcasm and negative comment.
I'm wondering what is causing this to happen.

I also wonder myself. I think if we just report them to the chief bartender instead engaging them, that might help.

I really do believe that there should be a zero tolerance policy on this site for such abuse. If a post is abusive - delete it immediately. If someone is habitually abusive ban them. It is so easy to let standards slip - if only a few people use abusive and intemperate language others respond in kind. Its very easy to respond angrily when someone flames you. But sooner or later other people start doing it more often once they see it happening and others getting away with it. Its like a pandemic - a few individuals infect others and soon it becomes common. I have even seen forums almost die from this (The Leica Forum over at Photonet was diabolical for this behaviour a couple of years and many people inlcuding myself just stopped visiting there.) There was a recent thread on this topic over at that forum in which people were bemoaning the fact that even though the "perps" have now gone elsewhere, the site is still 2 years on now almost moribund as a result. Please don't let it happen here!

Some people will act that way when there are no repercussions to their actions. They're the same people who swear and give you the finger in traffic, because they can make a quick getaway. There's no way they'd say the same things if you were standing there in front of them.

I say, just ban those miserable a$$holes immediately. They're old enough to know better. If they haven't learned how to be polite yet, then being banned is a quick and easy lesson.

I think this is one of the best photographic sites on the web,
especially for me and I would hate for a few to ruin this for
those of us that really enjoy coming to a very Unique Community
of photography.

So far I have not seen these abusive posts and hope I don't. My question though are these posters new members or have they been here awhile?

The culture here is by-and-large civil. Why waste time spewing anger when we can be learning from each other's experiences? I used to post elsewhere alot, but got tired of the insulting remarks.

Let me say this from a business perspective, once your clients (posters) leave it is extremely difficult to bring them back, Business 101. Let's stay on board and respect each other and continue to build this community. There are more posters here than on the Leica pug site, which says alot.

Only a tiny percentage of those with Tourette's have Coprolalia (involuntary swearing).
It's unfair to associate myself and my son (we both have Tourette's without Corprolalia) with someone who simply decides to behave badly, or "never got no home learning." It's not even fair to associate those with Corprolalia...since their problem is neurological and not behavioral.

It doesn't take a neurological disorder to be a jerk. Unlike Tourette's, that particular condition is rampant.

I woulds strongly agree with peterm1 about web sites where some people are allowed to use verbal attacks without any consequences. Some years ago there was a web site, rec.music.makers.bagpipe which was where many in the piping community gathered on-line. A few aggressive and inconsiderate people began to dominate the postings, flame wars were common and what with the attacks, porno and Viagra ads, there was no useful information or discussion to be found. We all migrated to Bob Dunsire's bagpipe web site, where things are well-regulated. Rec.music.makers.bagpipe may still be up and running for all I know, but no one much goes there anymore.

Just a thought.

With best regards to all.

I apologise. i think I've just been guilty of what I was complaining about even though it wasn't personally directed. Lack of sensitivity on my part.

Cept Frank Burns wasn't really nice ... He just tried to ACT nice at times. Mostly he failed miserably. :D

Don't worry. It's a prevalent stereotype and just about the only thing most people know about Tourette's.
I shouldn't be sensitive about it.

My point exactly. Thank you.

Which do you prefer? Obviously fake niceness, or the truth as the person speaking happens to see it?
