is it closer to the 40 fl than i'm thinking?

only once or twice. if you frame w/ the outside of the 40mm lines...it's almost right. basically adding another width of the 40mm frameline outside what you see should do it.

no...outside of 40mm frame (plus a bit) is 35mm aprox. the entire viewfinder is 28mm (what i used in addition to the 40 with it). i checked the viewfinder against my wife's slr w/ 28mm...and it was DEAD on (for me, and w/ my eyeball up against it). the photos always seemed to confirm that. so i would say 28mm is quicker to use with it...just because "what you see is what you get" at that point. but that little 35 will sure be great on there!

i am using a canon 35/1.8 on the CL i bought from another member here, the 35 FOV appears to be somewhere outside the 40 framline just as enochroot suggests, the trouble is the 35 with its adaptor brings up the 50 frameline as well, which is quite close to that of the 40, and with the metering information, RF, etc... the viewfinder looks a bit cluttered for me.... so the story goes, i just bought the summibron-c from enochroot to have clearer view with the CL

Both the 40 and 50 frame lines are always visible in the CL except when you mount a 90, then the 50 drops out leaving the 40 and 90 visible. When you mount the 40 Summicron, both 40 and 50 frame lines will be visible.

joe - yes, I meant a 28mm. One of the guys at today's meet had a mint Canon IIIS2 w/ a chrome 50/1.8 & 28/3.5. He had a Canon 28mm finder with it too, so I screwed the lens onto my 50 adaptor, popped on the 28 finder and took a look. To me both views were the same if I looked at the whole VF area on the CL. And that lens is tiny. I've never seen a lens that tiny before... 😱

Once I get Brett paid off for the 40/2, I'm going to be seriously looking for a Canon 28/3.5 to make a really great travel set - 28, 40 & 90. I think I can do the whole VF trick with the 7 as well, though it's higher magnification will make if less easy.

Slightly bigger I'd say. At least, for me, the CL is just barely big enough to be usable while I could never quite get used to the QL17. Just too small for my hands. The CL is annoyingly small at times, too, but with the much better VF/RF & the interchangeable lenses, I can accept it easier.

i have small hands and remember the cle fitting into them nicely so i think the cl will be fine for me also.
i'm thinking about the canon 28 again, keeping the cl for 28 & 35 focal lengths.

i think the 90 is sold...so a 28 is a possibility.

i'm also thinking about purple snakeskin emboss for the cl...🙂 keeping it in the family, so to speak.

i think that the placement of the shutter speed dial on the CL is the best of any camera i have ever used (including the speeds being visible in the finder). i was thinking "why in the world hasn't this caught on w/ other cameras?!?!" then it came to me. i think it's because of the rangefinder base. looking at a full size m...it seems as if the rangefinder window could get in the way. that is all i could think of. because from a functionality standpoint...it is the best!

I just compared the viewfinders of the CL and CLE with its 28mm framelines and I found the only way to get the whole 28mm field of view with the CL was to rake your eye around from one side to the other, you never get the whole view at a single glance like you do with the CLE's 28mm framelines. So i go against whats been said here and think the whole viewfinder at a single glance without raking your eye around is closer to the 35mm.

The Voigtlander 28/35 mini finder is highly recomended for a CL it barely increases its size and then gives you 28, 35. 40, 50, 90mm framelines still in a comact package. I have been using the Voigtlander 28mm f3.5 on the CL with the mini finder and its great. But im selling the Skopar now to help fund an Elmarit or Biogon 28. I will probably regret it as they wont be as compact as the Skopar.

Just to add: I compared the 35mm setting of the Canon VI-t; 35mm lines of the Leica M2; and Leica CL. Without "raking your eyes around, the ClL "full-frame" compared well with the Canon. The M2 showed a smaller area, not too surprising as Leica is conservative on the percent of frame actually shown. Enough so that the inner border of the 90mm framelines cover a 105mm lens. With a little practice, the CL finder would be easy to use with the 35mm lens.

Joe -- I succumbed to a similar fate. I wound up getting that CL in my local shop and it is great. I got it for a good price with the 40 cron, and now I have sent it off to DAG for a CLA since the high speeds were off (he is also going to convert it to non mercury batteries at no extra charge). It really is a great camera though. I have been looking for a small carry everywhere camera for awhile now, and I think this will fit the bill. I had bought a user Contax G1 and 45/2 before for this purpose, but I can't seem to like it, nor get it to work well for me, so I think I am going to sell it. The CL seems to fit me much better, it uses the M lenses I already have, it is lighter, the VF is light years ahead, and it is quieter and smaller. It really is a great little camera.

The little CL cops a bit of flack mainly from M owners but if you have the opportunity take the back off and look at how small the camera really is. Its quite surprising how they managed to fit all the mechanics in that small area especially when you consider it was done in the early 70's. Its a quirky little camera and very unique in its design. Often touted as really being a Minolta but its so quirky it can be nothing else but a Leitz design. As long as the meter is working it makes a great backup to an M.

CL Tip - When changing the film speed press the silver dial/button (in the center of the Shutter speed dial) in while your turning it to change the film speed. Every new CL owner I have met complains about how tight it is to change the film speed because they never press the silver dial/button in at the same time!
