I've got an M4 and I was going to send it for a CLA in a month or two. I've just noticed that a sort of "shadow" image has started to appear below horizontal lines and I conclude that this means that the rangefinder mechanism needs adjusting. Is this the normal symptom of a rangefinder going out of true?

I've also just taken delivery of a second M4 which is in really excellent, near mint condition but is missing the colourful central disc of the film speed dial on the back. I want to take the disc from the old M4 and put it on the new one. Can anybody suggest a way of doing this without either damaging the disc or the older camera and if it is possible, what sort of glue should I use for attaching it to the new one?

I used a very sharp needle to remove one and I still marked it slightly. As others have said get a new one and use any contact glue. You can get fake paper ones for about 3 euro but it's worth getting the proper ones IMO for around 12 euro.
Rangefinder sounds like it needs vertical adjustment. Very easy on M4's, you just take out the screw from the front of the top plate and using a jeweller's flat blade driver turn the screw left or right as required. Tiny amounts.

Gentlemen,

thank you for the tips. I shall take the 12 euro option. Is either DAG or Fargo a European supplier (the latter sounds US)?

Given that the M4 that needs adjusting is now my second stringer, I'll have a go as I have a set of jeweller's screwdrivers.

Thanks for the info, Nobbylon.

I just had the screw off the front but couldn't really see what was to be adjusted or how it was to be done. Not that it matters, cos like I said, it is down for a CLA anyway.
