As some of you know, Classic Camera Repair forum shut down. I have arranged to host it on RFF.

There are indeed problems into importing CCR into RFF's software.

For the time being, CCR in archive form (no posting) can be found here
http://rangefinderforum.com/classics/forum/messages/board-topics.html

Please lets other CCR members know.

If you know anyone who has had experience importing Discusware software into VB Bulletin, please let me know.

Thanks,

Stephen

Technically, importing won't be that hard - dump the Discusware database, match the tables to the VB tables, and import.

Going over the VB database schema, it seems the main stumbling block would be that there is no good way to preserve the author ownership of the original, at least unless we manage to convince all current and past CCR contributors to join RFF - the default VB schema has no way to handle non-member authors, and fudging that might break the existing RFF and would doubtlessly cut it off all future VB updates.

Personally, I can live with the current state, that is, rescuing the past content as a read-only system and starting from scratch where new postings are concerned.

good guess, but not true.

I'm told Discussware has no data base to import -- only flat files !

Flat files are just a very trivial form of database - it will take some trivial perl script to convert them into SQL import statements, but it must be possible, the more so as CCR followed the same basic structure (by forum/user/title/text/thread) as VB forum systems.

In any case, I think even when/if we find a technical solution there still would be considerable practical difficulties merging the old files, as there is no 1:1 mapping of user IDs - and rather than lose half the articles and invalidate most threads because they cannot be attributed to the proper authors, I could live with a readonly lookup for the past files (perhaps with a better search/reference function than that on the RFF forums - it should not be that hard to add some generic web site search system if the CCR threads are flat files).

Great stuff. I've posted a question or two on there before. Always had a few responses fairly quickly. Hope it can be integrated here soon and ready for new questions.

Good on you Stephen. For doing this with the classic camera repair forum, and for the RD1 files you host.
Thank you.
