It looks like the big thing to watch for is making sure any flash is switched off when you mount / unmount it from the camera, if you're not using the CLE flash.

The good thing with the CLE is that any of Minoltas PX flashes can be used with the CLE all with full TTL metering. (200PX, 123PX, 360PX). The good thing with these original flashes is they have auto power cut off switches in the foot to prevent any short circuits. Minolta also offers and off camera mounting system with full TLL but it does dwarf the camera somewhat. The PX flashed can be found so inexpensively that I dont see the need to look at other brands really.

I am glad to hear this too. Can you please clarify one thing however? Since CLE doesn't have the full program or P mode like the X700, one has to make sure that the shutter speed doesn't exceed the sync speed of 1/60 - is that correct?

No you dont have to worry about the sych speed. Even though the camera has no Program mode the TTL flash system works in the CLE's Auto mode with Aperture Priority Automatic. When you switch on a dedicated Minolta PX flash the synch speed at 1/60th of a second is selected automatically and stays there. As you alter the aperture the flash fires the correct amount of light determined off the film plane itself.

Thats great news! But what happens if I want to use it for fill flash with a m-rokkor 40mm wide open at f/2 in bright sunlight outside? I guess I am just a little confused.

Well unfortunately that situation will be a problem with any camera with a slow synch speed. The fact that a PX flash selects the flash synch automatically doesnt really alter the fact that it is a camera from a time when 1/60th of a sec was common. Even if you are using a non dedicated flash on manual the fastest synch speed is still the same.

Heeey, i dont mean to hijack the thread, but does anyone know if there's something in a comparable size to the CLE flash that has a thyristor? That flash would be great if it had a better recycle rate was thinking about the nikon SB30...will it work fine on the CLE? Thanks!

Under no circumstances use a Nikon SB flash on a Minolta CLE you will risk damaging the cameras circuitry.
Minolta made a rage of flashes for its X-700/X-500 that worked with the CLEs TTL flash metering system. The 280PX and 360PX have thyrister circuitry. These flashes also have the safety cut out switches on the base of the shoes to prevent any damage to the camera if you try removing the flash with it left on. These flashes are inexpensive now so thats the way I would go.

Ahhh i may look into the 280px, thanks for the heads up! Whew, i would feel pretty silly frying the circuits on my CLE, thanks! I really just wanted the smallest flash with a thyristor circuit so i don't have to wait a long time between shots.
