Cleaning Toplate

I have an Isolette III and it has someone's name on the rear top plate. Any suggestions on how I can remove it and not make a mess of it?

Do you know with what kind of material that name was written ?
Or is it scribed or etched ?

Someone has already made a mess of it. There are only three possibilities for "fixing" the mess:
1. Replace the top plate.
2. Remove the chrome, sand the name out of the brass, polish it and have it rechromed.
3. Remove the chrome, sand the name out of the brass, polish the brass, and clearcoat it.
