Cleaning yellowed markings

I think there is a kind of waxy paint stick that you can buy from auto parts store - its used for the highlighting the embossed markings on tyres and such; for those that are turned on by such things. I believe this is the ants pants for cameras as it can be rubbed into the engraved groves and then the excess is burnished off with a rag.

I think there's alternatives to it around, but it's the best I've found for cleaning gunk off pretty much anything.
 
If all else fails, ond only if all else fails, you can dig the remaining paint out and replace it, using one of the paint sticks sold by Microtools.
