close up with a IIa

Who says you can't do portraits with an old folder? I'd always kept clear of closeups, but this one jumped off the contact sheet at me. This is the Xenon coated lens on a IIa in the shade on a summer day, f/4 at film speed. (Yes, I'm finally getting around to printing my backlog of developed film from this summer. It's snowing in Seattle, what else am I going to do? Besides take more pictures....)

It is very nice, excellent photo. The only general prohibition against doing portraits with folders is with regard to parallax errors, which you seem to have avoided by staying far enough back. A tight closeup on a face might be pushing the limits of what the viewfinder can do for you a bit, but then one can always fall back and crop to achieve the desired effect. I love the look of the Xenon lens - have the same one in my Agfa Karat IV.

That is great. How did you ever coax that smile from her? My son-in-law has taught my grandson to always clown in some way when someone with a camera says smile. It is a real challenge getting good photos.

A quiet day, no distractions, no sister around, and I kept it casual, shooting a number of other things in the yard before turning toward her. It's kind of like photographing birds, I think. But she's not always patient. I have one of her in the kitchen eating an Oreo cookie that I call "the stink-eye shot." That's when it's like photographing grizzly bears.
