Many times during my daily shooting I find I want to focus little closer to the subject than my 50/2 Summicron will allow.

I'm wondering what options I have to focus closer.

I've seen the DR Summicron, but I think I've read the eyes wont fit my M6TTL properly.

So what are my options here? Did they make a NOOKY for the M system? Is there a good 90mm lens that focuses real close?

You can go wide. The 21mm SA focuses done to 17 inches, I believe (mine's home). The rangefinder stops coupling by then but stopped down you don't need it.

Apparently a very quick modification to the DR Summicron's goggles does the trick:

In the SLR world at least, wides have very close focus capabilities. However, they are ... WIDER.

Another lens in the normal range that has closer focus capabilities is the Nokton 40. It may focus closer than the RF can couple, but distance and framing could be estimated with pretty interesting results. And it's certainly less than $1000.

If you don't mind a little bother with your shooting you can find a Canon Converter B that will allow use of Canon FD lenses on your M6 with a LTM/M adapter. You must scale focus as the rangefinder is not coupled, but with a 35mm or wider at mid apertures that is no probem.

I have a 35mm Canon FD lens mounted on a Leica IIIf now and it will focus to 15 inches. At f5.6 the DOF is 1.5 inches, and f8 gives you 2 inches DOF.

Actually this combination is quite useable and an inexpensive way to expand your lens arsenal with wide angle optics. The 28mm and 24mm lenses are even more forgiving of small focus errors in your estimating of distances.

Yes I use an SLR for macro, what little I shoot of it. I'm just looking at the options. Thanks for the replies.

It's good to know a DR might work. Do the eyes adjust for paralax at that close focusing distance?

Well yeah, an SLR is the logical way to go, but who said this place is logical? 😀

However, when I'm carrying an RF, I don't want to also carry an SLR with macro equipment "just in case".

Thats the way I feel. I want to do it all with my M6. Is that so much to ask?

135mm at closest distance also gets extreme magnification for a rangefinder ... usually a sheet of writing paper will fill the frame. Great for isolating details.

I have not used one, but the Nikkor 50/1.4 in LTM mount scale-focused down to 18 inches (uncoupled).

In the 1950s, there were some aftermarket devices (Auto-Up seems to have been common) that added a set of goggles and a screw-on lens to achieve coupled focusing down to 18 inches. Had to be matched to a camera model and lens. I haven't used one but have come very close to getting one. Sometimes you just want the option in your camera bag without including a whole SLR outfit.

If I did as the pnet thread states with regard to the DR 'cron and its goggles, would it really work on my M6TTL? Anyone ever tried it?

I think I might look at the 90's with close focusing to get a similar FOV.

I think someone here referred to the minor surgery on the DR as being successful, but darned if I can find that thread. Maybe it exists in my imagination.

The thing about the DR is that it is just a wonderful lens. There are a couple of threads here with examples, and this one is a good example @ normal range/infinity.

If you have an Elmar or a Summar there's the NOOKY or the NOOKY-HESUM. For the collapsible 'cron or 2.8 Elmar there's the SOOKY. Theres even the OMIFO for 9cm Elmars.

Ray Harms told me about the DR Goggles fix for OUR M5. 🙂 It's super easy-you just remove one small screw and the post the screw is holding. The good news is that you can buy the lens & goggles and fry them on your M6. If the offending post is a problem on the M6, then just remove it.

I totally agree with everyone about the 50mm DR Summicron. It is a fabulous lens. I would buy one even if it didn't focus to 18". There was another thread recently asking about the magnification of the DR Summicron. I put up a couple pictures approximating the difference with and without the close focus capability.

One more time: Great lens! Don't leave home without it!

And now for something completlely different...

The lens heads of both the 50mm DR Summicron and the original 90mm Elmarit unscrew for bellows + visoflex use. 😱
