Can the collapsable 50 made for the Contax II be collapsed into the IIa body or does it smack into the shutter?

No problems, fully compatible.
Only the prewar 35mm Biogon and its East German counterpart will cause problems. Not sure about the Soviet version (which is a copy of the East German lens, which is pretty much the same as the prewar lens).

If you search the archives, you'll see a thread where we explained how to tighten the flanges so that it will lock into place more securely once extended.
