Collapsing a 50mm f/3.5 or F/2.8 non-M Elmar on the M5 (or CL) will destroy the metering stalk. However, it is OK to collapse the 50mm Summicron, because the length of the barrel that moves is short enough that stops before reaching the stalk. (Yes, I have verified this--very carefully!)

The 50mm Elmar-M looks to me like the length of the moving part of the barrel is equally short. Does anyone know if it is safe to collapse into the M5?

I have seen it done. The owner put a rubber spacer/ O-ring /gasket around the front element on the barrel. it was not very wide, but it kept the lens when ~90% collapsed from damaging the meters swing arm.
Yes, what Erik said works

I don't own an Elmar-M, but I wanted to ask this in case I should buy one and try to use it on my M5. I'd rather not have a lens that could inadvertently damage my M5! I'm comfortable with my collapsible Summicron, since it can't cause damage.

Thanks for the responses!

Just as a side note: I've tried on the CL and looked through the open film door what happens: it will not touch the meter, but a barrier that is in front of the meter, so the meter is not in danger.
