Seems like most of the younger posters here have learned Photography the wrong way!!
It used to be, Shutter speed, aperture, focus, compose and shoot.
That's it!!! Sometimes the order changed.
It's always those four variables.
Nowdays, the camera does the first three!! the youngling composes and shoots!!
BUT, that's not Photography!!
Processing the junk and making acceptable images is editing!!

I disagree, photography to me is getting a final image in print or on screen that I and others enjoy looking at regardless of the capture or editing process.

To get back to your initial question, I must agree with a number of posters on this thread. I am a newbie with a Nikon DSLR and have found that shooting NEFF is the way to go especially when using Nikon Capture NX2. You can tweak in camera settings for JPEG and get the results you like but NEFF is far more versatile and takes just a few minutes to post process an image in NX2. I also found that I habitually shoot with -.3 to -.7 exposure comp set to avoid blown highlights and recover shadows in NX2. The whole process is much faster than scanning my negs and then post processing them in PS. I also found Picasa 3 Beta to be very good at post processing NEFF files from the D700 but it seems to only save them as JPEGS. It is all photography be it film or digital. Enjoy your D90 and try NX2.
