Hi! I'm a long-time reader and first-time poster.

I just did an indoor test of all my 50s, from wide open down to f/5.6. The lenses are:

Summicron Rigid
Canon 50/1.8 LTM (chrome)
Elmar 50/2.8 LTM (the old Elmar)
Summitar (10-bladed, coated)
Summar
Sonnar 50/2 (Zeiss Jena, collapsible, uncoated)
Jupiter-8
Canon 50/1.5 LTM
Sonnar 50/1.5 (Zeiss-Opton, coated)

They were on my M3, with Ektar 100.

Here's the set on flickr:

Some observations:
  • I'm not sure that the scans necessarily kept all the highlights (some look a little blown out). These are just machine scans from a (good) local lab.
  • The ghosts opposite the flashlight are really interesting. All of the double-Gauss lenses have fairly prominent ghosts, but none of the Sonnar designs do.
  • The Summicron seems to show the most detail and contrast, especially on the meter stick.
  • The uncoated lenses, though lower in contrast, did surprisingly well for sharpness and resolution.
Anyway, enjoy!

Thanks for the test. It brings back memories of times when I spent many hours and days comparing lenses.
