Canada, eh.
Like Joe, I am now also complete and at one with my gear. My Summarit arrived from Australia. I have enough 50's now to keep me happy with the different results I can achieve. Time to take some pictures, including comparison-type ones. Can't wait to get to know my gear better!

Does this mean you're going to try each of your lenses on several different films ?

That's a lot of test shots.

p.s. whats your Summarit like ? is it hazy ? (all the best ones are, before they're CLA'd)

I'm curious with the Summitars going around here lately...

To somebody having both a Summitar and a Helios 103 I'd like to ask for a favor... to take some test shots with them both and compare behaviour. I recall reading somewhere the Helios shared many characteristics with the Summitar but now I don't know if I really read it or dreamed.

I try to dream with gorgeous redheads and end dreaming Helios and Summitars... something's not good here...

Do you own a Helios 103 Frank ?

And sorry for the OT!

Hektor, I'm going to standardize on FP4 with Diafine, or HP5 with Ilfosol S (for more contrast), depending on the contrast level of these older lenses. The best are hazy, you say? I guess I"m disappointed then, because this one is clear (but dusty). Does that count?

Francisco, I could tell you if it's "their" or "its", but that would come across sooo teacher-like, I won't.

Oscar, I have a Helios 103 in Contax/Kiev mount. It will be part of that mount's 50's testing.

I will be complete when I get my R3A, but the G2 is pretty pleasing.

Frank, Sorry I didn't want to buy your 105. After the R3A, I'm going to sell the FM2T and buy the Fm3a and a new 105, the one with the built in slide hood.

It's snowing in Vancouver.

My 105 (for Nikon SLR) has got a built-in sliding hood and it's worn a protective uv filter from the day I bought it, so the glass is pristene. 🙂

OT: frank, glad to hear your summarit arrived from my 'evil twin'... strange to hear there's someone here in syd who shares my name and is also into rffs. does he frequent this site too? when i read your thread, i thought you meant you were content with one piece of gear... let us know how the different 50s compare.

heh heh.... its taken a while but my gear is slowly coming together too. i got an old working sekonic light meter, the yellow filter i bought off the bay turns out to be the correct one for the summitar! 🙂 waiting for gordy's wrist strap to complete the kit. happy days... now, for a yellow 2 filter, how much do i need to compensate for?

No, the other Wee Ming does not frequent here. Glad to hear about your yellow filter. I think it's 1 stop for the light yellow and 2 for the deeper one but I'm not certain of that.

FrankS,

when I said the best ones are hazy, that's because they've been stored away for years and not damaged. You do have to make them clean and bright to get the best pics. Yours has probably had that done already.

Mine is still hazy, must do something about it one day.

It's a 41mm filter, right? Does anyone happen to have any of these they would sell me? This Summarit came to me with unblemished glass and coatings, so I'm going to put a protective filter on it and I don't care what anybody thinks about that. 🙂

Well, in the Monty Python spirit, I think I prefer a hood (shade) to a filter, it would reduce flare rather than add to it.

You can always use a cap as well.

you know frank, i don't think a hexar af would count as it has a 35mm lens on it...

We should have made a bet, Joe. 🙂

Here is the new Summarit. Turns out that a toilet paper roll is the perfect diameter for a lens shade. As an added benefit, the toilet paper on the roll acts as an effective bumper for the lens!

Frank: [corrected --- bad Gabriel, bad -- see below] BTW, I have a slip-on Leitz Skylight 1A that never sold (hint hint) 😉

I miss my Summarit; I think FP4+ is too much film for the lens, imo. You may want to start out with HP5+ or maybe Fuji Acros. Many people see the low contrast as its weak point; I think it should be used as its strongest point when shooting B&W.
