Condition of Epson-site refurb units, recently received?

Joe,
You must have a screw loose. I just got mine yesterday from an eBay seller in Japan. Used, but described as mint. It was. No rattling or any other noises. I'm keeping my fingers croseed, though. These cameras sound more temperamental than a Diva, with the same repair policy.

Well maybe a quick trip to DAG is in order. I hate the idea of sending it to Epson at this point.

No point in sending it to Epson. That is just a crap shoot. I think if you buy this camera you have to be prepared to support it in the manner to which it wants to become accustomed.

The paint and LCD on the Loaner Epson leant me when mine was in dock was pretty messy, the base and LCD swivel were looking very PJ`d ;-) these things seem to scruffy-up fast . We don`t have refurbs in the UK, only the occasional dealer offering unsold new stock (mine came from calumet, RW has had a few too)

After placing my original order for a refurb on 11/23, I took delivery, today of serial #45XX. This is a big deal for me as I have been waiting years for an "affordable" digital rangefinder for my 50mm Summicron, current optical formula, and 135/f4 last optical formula. I will be adding a 28mm at some point.
The camera was packed ever so haphazardly in a white box, within a box, with users manual and battery/charger. The battery was new, and the camera appeared as new. There were no smudges, marks or dust of any kind on the LCD, glass gauge cover, or any surface. No screwheads anywhere showed wear. I would guess, Epson is selling old stock as refurbs. 45XX is halfway through the 10K run of R-D1 cameras. I would also speculate more is on the way, so stay tuned to the Epson site with "Website Watcher" or some such monitor.

Anyway, Version 1 of the firmware was on the camera, which I have already upgraded to 2.0. It was after dark when the delivery was made, so any quick infinity focus checks were not possible. I intend on starting a new thread when I can devote time to it, describing the operation and rangefinder accuracies. Thanks.

My camera, 46xx, sounds exactly like Jim's. It was a very unceremonious unwrapping, but that's okay...I can't seem to put this thing down. Here I am, up at 1:45am, doing crazy lens testing, collimating, trying out some duds. I thought my camera was backfocusing, but I don't think it is. Here's a beater Summicron DR that I've never used until just now. Sharp!
